Junior Accountant

The role and its impact
We're looking for a Financial Accountant to help deliver quality financial information and drive continuous improvement across our Accounting team. You'll be a key contributor to Xero's month-end close process, supporting our financial reporting requirements as a listed issuer. This role is an opportunity to work across multiple aspects of accounting—from balance sheet reconciliations to technical accounting support—while building relationships throughout our business.
In this role, you'll develop expertise across the full accounting cycle and take ownership of driving process improvements. You'll have the chance to challenge the status quo, leverage emerging tools responsibly to reduce manual effort, and make a real impact on how we operate. Your work will support Xero's external disclosures, employee equity schemes, and strategic financial projects that help us supercharge small business globally.
The team and how they connect
Our Group Accounting team owns accounting functions across Xero worldwide and works closely with Finance, Tax, Treasury, and FP&A. The team is collaborative and supportive, with regular connection points both in-person and virtually. You'll join a diverse team that values professional scepticism, creative problem-solving, and genuine partnership.
The team is currently working on
- Month-end close process and balance sheet reconciliations using integrated finance systems
- Half-year and annual reporting cycles, including audit support and external disclosures
- Process improvements and automation opportunities across accounting workflows
- Implementation of AI tools and emerging technologies to streamline manual processes and improve financial data quality
Where and how you can work
This role is based in Wellington, with our accounting team split across Australia and New Zealand. We're flexible with how you work—with office space available and regular team connection days. We balance focused work time with collaborative moments, so you'll have the autonomy to do your best work while staying connected to the team.
Here are some of the things we're looking for
- You'll bring strong technical accounting knowledge, with a Chartered Accountant qualification (or on your way to one).
- You demonstrate an eye for process improvement and a genuine enthusiasm for finding efficiencies—not just completing tasks, but questioning how things could work better.
- You have excellent attention to detail, alongside the ability to analyse financial results, spot trends, and communicate your findings with clarity.
- You're comfortable being uncomfortable in a fast-paced environment where priorities evolve and you're expected to Go Bold by thinking beyond the immediate problem and taking initiative.
