ABOUT SECONDZ
Secondz is building software that automates complex business workflows by reading documents and producing accurate, reliable outputs.
We are a small, fast-moving product team looking for backend developers to join our engineering team and work on a live product.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will build and own backend services, APIs, data pipelines, integrations, and background processing systems.
You will be involved across the complete development cycle:
• Design
• Development
• Testing
• Deployment
• Monitoring
• Maintenance
WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Build scalable REST APIs using Python and FastAPI.
• Design and manage PostgreSQL databases, including schemas, indexes, migrations and query optimisation.
• Implement secure authentication and authorisation using JWT, refresh tokens and RBAC.
• Use Redis for caching, rate limiting and session/token management.
• Build background jobs and queue-based systems using Celery, RQ, Arq or similar technologies.
• Implement retries, failure handling and reliable background processing.
• Process and parse real-world documents such as Excel files, PDFs and emails.
• Build third-party integrations using Google APIs, OAuth, webhooks, WhatsApp and payment APIs.
• Containerise applications using Docker and docker-compose.
• Write unit and integration tests.
• Participate in code reviews and maintain engineering quality.
• Implement structured logging and robust error handling.
• Debug production issues by investigating actual data and system behaviour.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• 1+ years of professional backend development experience with Python.
• Strong hands-on experience with FastAPI, Django REST or Flask.
• Strong understanding of asynchronous programming and concurrency.
• Strong PostgreSQL knowledge:
- Schema design
- Joins
- Indexes
- Transactions
- Migrations
- Query optimisation
• Experience with Docker and docker-compose.
• Experience with Redis, caching and basic pub/sub.
• Understanding of background workers and queues such as:
- Celery
- RabbitMQ
- Kafka
• Strong understanding of REST API design.
• Experience with Pydantic v2 and request validation.
• Knowledge of JWT, OAuth2, password hashing, RBAC and secure API design.
• Good understanding of data structures, async programming and concurrency.
• Experience with Git, pull requests and code reviews.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work carefully with real-world data instead of making assumptions.
GOOD TO HAVE
• SQLAlchemy 2.x and async drivers such as asyncpg.
• Alembic.
• Event-driven architecture.
• WebSockets and Server-Sent Events.
• Multi-tenant SaaS architecture.
• API rate limiting and audit logging.
• Full-text search and Elasticsearch.
• PyMuPDF, pandas and openpyxl.
• File storage and pre-signed URLs.
• OWASP Top 10 and secure coding practices.
• Secrets management and encryption.
• Performance profiling and load testing using Locust or k6.
• pytest, factory patterns and contract testing.
