About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Ampere is an Amman-based environmental consultancy and one of the few MENA-region entities accredited to validate and verify carbon projects internationally. We're looking to engage a freelance Technical Expert in Bangladesh, on a project basis, to support assignments in (TA 2) energy distribution - transmission and distribution networks and measures that reduce grid losses. The current assignment involves the installation of energy-saving (low-loss) conductors on a transmission line connecting the Barisal (North), Gopalganj (North) and Faridpur substations.
We're after a practical, hands-on professional with real industry experience - someone who has worked, or currently works, inside a transmission/distribution utility, a conductor manufacturer or a grid EPC contractor where these topics come up as part of the day-to-day job - rather than a senior policy or international-consultancy background.
Key Responsibilities
• Review and assess transmission/distribution assets and loss-reduction measures - e.g. low-loss conductor specifications, line loading and technical losses - relevant to the assignment (TA 2).
• Provide technical input on line design, conductor installation, operation and maintenance, including relevant safety and grid-reliability considerations.
• Check how energy flows and losses are metered at the substations, how the data is recorded and reported, and whether it is reliable.
• Prepare clear, practical technical notes, assessments and recommendations for Ampere and any relevant project counterparts.
• Where relevant, liaise with utility/substation engineers, contractors and regulatory contacts to gather accurate, on-the-ground information.
• Flag practical risks, gaps or compliance issues encountered during the assignment in plain, actionable terms.
What We're Looking For
• 4 to 10 years of relevant, hands-on professional experience - we are not looking for a top-tier international expert or celebrity consultant, just someone genuinely experienced in the subject matter.
• Direct, practical experience in power transmission or distribution, gained through ordinary industry work (e.g. at a transmission or distribution utility, a conductor/cable manufacturer, or an EPC contractor building lines and substations).
• Background in a regular company or industrial/utility setting is preferred over experience limited to UN programmes, carbon-market projects, or high-level international-advisory work.
• Electrical or power-systems engineering, or a related technical degree.
• Practical, plain-spoken communication style - comfortable writing short technical notes rather than lengthy policy reports.
• Fluency in Bangla is essential, as the work involves direct communication with local site teams and Bangla-language documents; good working English is sufficient.
Nice to Have
• Experience with transmission-loss calculations, substation metering or line-conductor standards (e.g. IEC).
• Familiarity with the Bangladesh national grid and its operators.
• General awareness of carbon-crediting mechanisms (e.g. the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)) - useful background, but not a requirement, and not a substitute for hands-on industry experience.
Engagement Details
Employment type: Freelance / independent contractor, engaged per project.
Duration: Project-based - length tied to each assignment; potential for repeat engagements on future projects.
Location: Bangladesh-based candidates preferred. Assignments may require on-site work at project facilities in Bangladesh.
Availability: Flexible - we will typically reach out 1 to 3 weeks before each assessment, so the expert should be able to make themselves available at relatively short notice.
