About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

About IonQ:
IonQ, Inc. [NYSE: IONQ] is the world’s leading quantum platform and merchant supplier - delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. IonQ’s newest generation of quantum computers, the IonQ Tempo, is the latest in a line of cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners including Amazon Web Services, and AstraZeneca achieve 20x performance results and accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. In 2025, the company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance.
Headquartered in College Park, Maryland, IonQ has operations in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Washington, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Our quantum computing services are available through all major cloud providers, while we also meet the needs of networking and sensing customers across land, sea, air, and space. IonQ is making quantum platforms more accessible and impactful than ever before.
Role OverviewRole:
We are looking for a customer obsessed, systems minded product leader to build the vision and specifications for the software and tooling that will deliver the best quantum fleet management in the world, for IonQ and for our customers. As a Senior Staff Product Manager within IonQ's Quantum Computing product family, you will join a cross functional team whose mission is to build and deliver the world's best quantum computers to solve the world's most complex problems.
In this role, you will own Fleet Management and the platform that enables it as a product offering. That covers telemetry and observability, remote management, incident response and planned service, together with integration into the commercial operations, deployment and logistics information and tools that let IonQ grow from per system, per site operations to high leverage, coordinated management of every system we deploy, wherever it lives.
Fleet management is both a product area and part of what we sell. Once a system is delivered, on a customer site or in our own cloud, our managed service keeps it running for the life of the contract. Today that work is done well by skilled people, but the tooling behind it was not built to scale. You will turn it into a first class offering, where uptime is treated as a design requirement and is achieved through great tools rather than heroics.
This is a global remit. As our fleet grows across North America, Europe and Asia, you will help us move to a follow the sun model, supporting systems from a small number of operations centres rather than placing people at every site.
Responsibilities:
You will start by treating the people who run and support our systems as your customers: internal and customer fleet operations, reliability, commercial operations, service and support. You will spend real time alongside them to learn how they work today, where the toil, blind spots and heroics are, and what good would look like for each of them, and you will build a strong point of view on what it takes to run a resilient, highly available global fleet of quantum computers.
You will immerse yourself in IonQ's system architecture, control and classical infrastructure, data pipelines, build and maintenance motions, and the current state of our tooling. Working closely with resilience, operations and engineering leads, you will understand what is possible, what is already in flight and where the constraints sit, and you will turn a diffuse set of pains and desires into a clear vision and roadmap.
From there, you will lead cross functional efforts to simplify, streamline and ship. Where we build, you will partner with SRE and engineering to define requirements, sequence work and land it. Where we buy, you will drive selection and rollout. Where the gap is process or communication, you will work with the PMO and the teams involved to improve it, and you will establish clear interfaces between Compute Products and the operations and commercial teams who depend on this tooling.
You will instrument what you ship, using feedback, support volume, incident and availability data and resolution metrics to understand whether the tools are working and where to go next. You will also help feed what we learn about operability and maintainability back into how we design and ship the next hardware generation, and begin extending the platform to customers as they take on more of their own system operation.
Key responsibilities include:
Build a deep understanding of how internal and customer fleet operations, reliability, service and support teams run our systems today, and where they need better tools
Define and own the vision and roadmap for fleet management across telemetry and observability, operator and back office tools, SLA, SLO and availability tracking, sparing and maintenance planning
Establish north star metrics for fleet health and operational effectiveness, and make them visible across the company
Lead build and buy decisions with SRE, engineering and the PMO, and set clear interfaces between Compute Products and the teams who depend on this tooling
Use incident, availability and support data to iterate, feed operability lessons into future hardware generations and extend the platform to customers
Requirements:
To be successful in this role, you will bring substantial experience in technical product management, ideally with direct ownership of internal platforms, operational tooling or infrastructure software. Most great product managers did something else first, and here we are especially interested in people whose earlier careers were in engineering, fleet or network operations, process engineering or systems engineering, so that they understand what operational data is for and how the day to day workflow really runs.
You will be a high agency, high accountability product leader who brings your own energy to an ambiguous area and drives impact through persistence and adaptability. This is a product leadership role rather than an operations or programme management role: we want someone who thinks about fleet management as an offering and a book of work, not someone who carries out the hands on management themselves.
You will have enough technical fluency to work directly with SREs and engineers on telemetry, process flows, data pipelines and API surfaces as first class products, and the empathy to sit shoulder to shoulder with the people who keep complex systems running. Experience of low volume, high complexity frontier technology, from R&D through to first deployments, will serve you well here.
Communication matters a great deal in this role. You will need excellent written and verbal communication, with a proven ability to explain complex topics clearly to technical and non technical audiences, from engineering teams to company leadership and customers. You do not need a background in quantum computing; we care more about how you think, how you learn and how you lead.
You’d be a great fit with:
A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research or a related technical field, or equivalent experience, with 12+ years in technical product management or equivalent roles
Product experience with private cloud deployments, scientific computing or high performance computing platforms, including their tools, users, business models and operational challenges
Experience building or scaling tooling for distributed, high value physical infrastructure, such as data centre or HPC operations platforms, DCIM or observability stacks, or remote field service for scientific instruments or connected hardware
Experience with AI tooling and workflows, both for rapid prototyping and for predictive, self healing or agentic product offerings
Experience taking internal tools through to customer facing products, familiarity with quantum computing or deep tech R&D, or experience leading an
