About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Detroit has no shortage of people doing incredible work. We make sure the world can find them.
Uprise Labs is a Detroit-based 501(c)(3) with a simple but ambitious mission: use digital marketing, analytics, design, and web development to help other nonprofits punch above their weight. We're talking environmental organizations, community development groups, animal rescues -- the people doing the hard, unglamorous work that actually makes our community better. They deserve great websites. That's where you come in.
The Role
We're looking for a Website Development Intern who has a great eye for design and wants to turn that instinct into real web development skills. You don't need to come in knowing how to code. You need to come in caring about how things look and feel -- and be ready to learn how to build them in Squarespace.
You'll work alongside a team of passionate volunteers who are building real things for real organizations. The work matters. The learning is hands-on. And you'll leave with a portfolio that proves it.
What you'll actually do:
Build and refine Squarespace websites for Detroit-area nonprofits
Translate design instincts into layouts that actually work on screen
Collaborate with volunteers across design, marketing, and strategy
Support organizations doing meaningful work in environmental stewardship, neighborhood development, and animal welfare across Metro Detroit
What we're looking for:
A genuinely sharp eye for design -- you notice when something looks off and you care about fixing it
Curiosity and enthusiasm over a perfect resume -- this is a learning role
Someone comfortable working in a collaborative, volunteer-driven environment
Any experience with design tools (Canva, Figma, Adobe) or website platforms is a plus, not a requirement
Students or recent grads welcome -- if you're trying to break into web work, this is a great door
What's the deal, honestly:
This is an unpaid internship. We're a nonprofit run largely by volunteers, and we want to be upfront about that. What we can offer is real project ownership, a supportive team that genuinely cares about your growth, a four-day workweek (Monday through Thursday, every week), and the satisfaction of building things that make Detroit better. If you're looking to build your portfolio and your skills while doing something that actually matters -- this is a solid fit.
