About the Role
We are seeking a Director, Technology Investment Products & Economics to lead the development and adoption of our Technology Investment Data Platform (TIDP).
The role begins with a practical mandate: improve visibility into technology usage, cost, ownership, and optimization opportunities through FinOps and Showback. Over time, TIDP will evolve into a broader technology investment capability connecting technology consumption with contracts, commitments, vendor spend, total cost of ownership, investment plans, and business outcomes.
This is a product leadership role with significant technical depth. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with engineers and data teams on architecture, data models, attribution, lineage, and platform requirements, but will not be expected to own the underlying engineering organization.
A significant part of the role will be working directly with technology leaders, product owners, Finance, Procurement, and executives to understand the decisions they need to make, translate those needs into product capabilities, and help users act on the resulting information.
The Director will serve as the end-to-end product owner for TIDP, from the economic data foundation and Tech Subledger through Showback, optimization, decision products, adoption, and value realization.
What You’ll Do
Own the TIDP Product Strategy
Define the product vision, roadmap, priorities, user experiences, and success measures for TIDP.
Lead user and executive discovery to understand technology investment questions and translate them into scalable product capabilities.
Partner with engineering and enterprise data teams to define requirements for the underlying data platform and Tech Subledger.
Ensure TIDP develops as a coherent decision platform rather than a collection of reports and dashboards.
Establish FinOps, Showback, and Technology Economics
Build trusted visibility into technology cost, usage, ownership, forecasts, and optimization opportunities.
Develop Showback and self-service capabilities for technology and product owners.
Establish meaningful unit economics that help distinguish changes driven by consumption, pricing, architecture, adoption, capacity, or contractual commitments.
Develop transparent approaches to cost attribution versus allocation, prioritizing costs that technology owners can understand and influence.
Drive optimization from opportunity identification through accountable action and verified outcomes.
Shape the Technology Investment Data Foundation
Own the product and economic requirements for the Tech Subledger, including:
Cost and usage models
Technology ownership
Attribution and shared-cost treatment
Historical lineage and effective dating
Reconciliation and data quality
Forecasts and commitments
Economic definitions and controls
Partner with data and platform engineering teams that own technical architecture, pipelines, security, reliability, and implementation.
Product ownership is end-to-end; engineering execution remains federated.
Expand Beyond Traditional FinOps
Over time, extend TIDP into broader technology investment management, including:
Cloud, infrastructure, and data-platform economics
AI consumption and unit economics
SaaS and software utilization
Vendor contracts and commitments
Migration and decommission economics
Total cost of ownership
Technology investment planning
Business cases and value realization
Help leadership answer questions such as:
What is driving technology spend and consumption?
Which costs can technology owners influence?
Where are we underutilizing technology or contractual commitments?
What is the cost of the products and services we operate?
Which technologies should we expand, optimize, consolidate, migrate, or retire?
Are technology investments producing the expected outcomes?
Build Decision Products, Not Just Dashboards
Develop experiences that help users understand:
What changed? Why? Who owns it? What action should be considered? What is the expected impact? Did the action produce the expected result?
Capabilities may include self-service analytics, executive views, variance explanations, optimization recommendations, forecasting, scenario analysis, alerts, and AI-assisted decision support.
Who You’ll Work With
This role operates across the organization and requires influence without relying solely on direct authority.
You will partner closely with:
Engineering and technology leaders
Product and platform owners
Data and architecture teams
Finance and FP&A
Procurement and vendor management
AI and cloud platform teams
Senior executives
You will translate between these communities—connecting technical consumption, financial economics, product decisions, and business outcomes.
What We’re Looking For
Significant experience in technical product management, technology economics, FinOps, TBM/ITFM, data products, technology strategy, platform management, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated ownership of a complex product or capability from problem discovery through roadmap, delivery, adoption, and measurable outcomes.
Strong understanding of technology economics, including several of the following:
Cost and usage
Forecasting
Unit economics
Attribution and allocation
Optimization
Business cases and investment analysis
Technical fluency sufficient to work credibly with engineering and architecture teams on data models, data quality, lineage, integrations, cloud platforms, and platform architecture.
Ability to translate complex technical and financial information into clear decisions for senior leaders.
Experience working across Engineering, Product, Finance, Procurement, Data, and Operations.
Demonstrated ability to influence distributed teams and senior stakeholders.
Strong analytical, written, and executive communication skills.
Helpful Experience
Experience in one or more of the following is valuable but not required:
FinOps or cloud economics
Technology Business Management / IT Financial Management
Data-platform or enterprise-data product management
Technology strategy or Technology COO organizations
Technology FP&A
SaaS, software, or vendor economics
AI economics / AI FinOps
Technology portfolio or investment management
FOCUS or FinOps Foundation frameworks
Cloud and enterprise data platforms
SQL and analytical tooling
The Candidate Profile
The strongest candidate may not come from a traditional FinOps background.
They may have built their career in FinOps, TBM, technical product management, data platforms, technology strategy, technology finance, platform engineering, or AI economics.
What matters is the ability to operate at the intersection of:
Technology + Product + Data + Finance + Investment Decision-Making
The successful candidate will be comfortable discussing architecture and data with engineers, attribution and forecasting with Finance, contracts and commitments with Procurement, product economics with technology owners, and investment trade-offs with executives.
What Success Looks Like
Success will be measured by whether TIDP improves technology decisions, not by the number of dashboards produced.
Key outcomes include:
Increasing visibility into technology cost, usage, and ownership.
Improving the quality and coverage of cost attribution.
Establishing trusted and historically consistent technology-economic data.
Increasing adoption and self-service by accountable technology owners.
Reducing the effort required to answer recurring technology-economic questions.
Turning insights into accountable actions and verified outcomes.
Improving optimization, commitment utilization, vendor, architecture, and investment decisions.
Expanding from FinOps and Showback into broader technology investment management.
The long-term objective is to create a durable platform connecting:
Investment → Cost → Usage → Ownership → Outcomes
and give technology leaders and executives better information to decide where to invest, where to optimize, and what to change.
