About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
We’re looking for an Applied Mathematician or Analytical Physicist with strong analytical instincts, physical intuition and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving to join our Industrials team.
The team develops technologies and products that solve complex real-world challenges across diverse markets, including environmental sensing, semiconductor manufacturing and industrial equipment. Working across multiple disciplines, we combine scientific analysis, physical modelling and engineering to understand problems at a fundamental level and turn that understanding into better products and technologies.
As an Applied Mathematician at TTP, you’ll get to the heart of complex challenges, identify the underlying physical processes and translate them into mathematical models that help guide the way forward. You’ll use first-principles reasoning to challenge assumptions, identify the effects that really matter and make sense of complexity through well-judged simplifications.
The variety is a big part of what makes the role exciting. You could be modelling multiphase flows in complex systems, simulating cutting-edge optoelectronic and photonic technologies, or exploring the feasibility of a novel process and helping guide the scale-up of a prototype design. Each project brings a different challenge, so you’ll need to switch context efficiently, get up to speed quickly in unfamiliar fields and manage several projects in parallel.
Your work will span a broad range of modelling approaches, from analytical calculations and simplified models using MATLAB or custom Python code to detailed numerical simulations, including 3D multiphysics modelling and computational fluid dynamics using tools such as COMSOL. Projects may progress from simple analytical models to more sophisticated simulations.
We value insight and sound judgement as much as analytical rigour. Working at pace, often with incomplete information, you’ll need to know when to investigate further and when a sufficiently good model is enough to make a decision. You’ll also be able to communicate your findings clearly, explaining the implications and uncertainties of your analysis to colleagues and clients, and turning complex results into practical recommendations.
With great facilities, bright and collaborative colleagues and the freedom to innovate, your future at TTP is what you make it. We value ambition, leadership and technical excellence, and provide a fantastic environment in which to develop your career.
We’re looking for an analytical, curious problem-solver who enjoys applying mathematics and physical intuition to complex, real-world challenges.
You’ll ideally bring:
A PhD in applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline.
Excellent mathematical reasoning, with the ability to translate real-world problems into mathematical models from first principles.
Experience developing and using computational models and simulations of physical systems, from simplified analytical approaches to more detailed numerical models.
Experience with tools such as MATLAB and/or COMSOL, alongside programming skills in Python or another relevant language to develop your own models and analysis tools.
The ability to quickly understand unfamiliar technical problems, identify the key physical processes and adapt your approach across different scientific and engineering domains.
A pragmatic approach to analysis, balancing mathematical rigour with the need to reach useful conclusions and make decisions at pace.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex analysis clearly and translate results into actionable insights for multidisciplinary teams and clients.
