Founding AI Engineer, Agents and Evals

MimoLabs builds Mimo, an agentic system for making physical things. Describe anything and Mimo helps you make it: he designs the geometry, simulates that it can be made, configures material, process and price, and routes it to production, across 3D printing, CNC, laser cutting and more. Mimo ships today as Mimo Studio for anyone regardless of skill, and we are building developer tools and enterprise solutions for more technical applications.
We are a VC funded, experienced technical team, based at Newlab in Detroit and remote across the US.
THE PROBLEM YOU WOULD OWN
Mimo is an agent: a model with tools, context and memory, working alongside a person to make a physical thing. You will own how Mimo thinks and behaves, and the evaluations that decide what ships.
- The context layer. What Mimo knows, when, and at what cost: system context, retrieval and memory as one budget.
- Tool contracts. The definitions, results and failure modes of the tools Mimo calls.
- Evaluation. A measured bar for every behaviour change: offline suites, graded live passes, regression gates.
- Behaviour and voice. How Mimo reasons, asks, explains and recovers, and the rules users set for their own Mimo.
- Models. Which model runs where, and the gate a new one must pass.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
- Agent systems in production. Tool use, multi-step loops, streaming, failure recovery, with results you can show.
- Evaluation design. You build the benchmark before you trust the change: graded suites, regression gates, human review.
- Context engineering. Prompts, retrieval and memory as one budget; you know what the model needs and what it costs.
- Tool design. Contracts a model can use reliably: schemas, results, errors.
- Python, and comfort in a large production codebase with a strict test baseline.
- Writing. An evaluation report a founder can act on.
NICE TO HAVE
- Parametric or code-first CAD authoring; 3D geometry fluency.
- Multi-model routing and cost attribution; fine-tuning for tool use.
- Retrieval systems in production.
- Published benchmarks or tool-use evaluations.
- Voice and UX writing for an agent product.

Everyone runs several AI coding agents using our custom dev tooling within a proven process. You have the freedom to expand your own tooling and influence how we build and ship fast. Fluency with agent systems matters most for this role; you already build this way.

Expect our founders up at 2am sending memes while in flowstate building core product and making wild breakthroughs.
Remote across the US, with the company's home at Newlab in Detroit and occasional travel there.
