Position Overview
EOS Space Systems is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design, architecture and delivery of advanced software systems supporting our Space Domain Awareness and Space Control capabilities.
This role combines software architecture, hands-on development, technical leadership and product innovation. You will work closely with systems, optical and operational stakeholders to shape the software platforms that underpin some of Australia's most advanced space surveillance and laser-based technologies.
As a senior member of the engineering team, you will lead architectural decisions, mentor engineers, influence product roadmaps and ensure software solutions are secure, scalable and aligned with customer and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Lead software architecture, design and technical decision-making across major software platforms.
Define software roadmaps aligned with product strategy and future capability growth.
Establish and promote engineering standards, best practices and software development processes.
Lead software design reviews, code reviews and technical governance activities.
Manage technical risk and ensure software solutions meet operational, safety and performance requirements.
Software Development & Delivery
Design, develop and maintain high-performance software supporting telescope, laser and Space Domain Awareness operations.
Lead software integration, verification, validation and deployment activities.
Drive adoption of DevOps practices, automation frameworks and CI/CD pipelines.
Lead resolution of complex system and software issues across development and operational environments.
Support customer demonstrations, trials, deployments and acceptance activities.
Stakeholder & Product Engagement
Work directly with Systems Engineering, Optical Engineering and customer stakeholders to define requirements and deliver integrated solutions.
Lead development of intuitive user experiences and operational interfaces.
Champion user-centred design principles to improve mission effectiveness and customer outcomes.
Contribute to proposals, technical strategies, product planning and business growth initiatives.
Support future technology planning and capability development activities.
Team Leadership
Mentor Software Engineers, graduates and junior team members.
Provide technical coaching and engineering leadership across software teams.
Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
Essential Skills & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline.
Minimum 7 years of professional software engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience leading software architecture and technical design activities.
Experience delivering complex, high-availability or mission-critical software systems.
Strong expertise in systems integration, distributed systems and real-time processing environments.
Experience developing and improving operational user interfaces and software usability.
Proven experience implementing DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and software automation.
Strong stakeholder engagement and technical leadership skills.
Desirable Skills & Experience
Extensive C++ development experience on Linux and Windows platforms.
Strong Python development and automation experience.
Experience within space, defence, aerospace, observatory or scientific environments.
Experience with telescope control systems, sensor management or tracking systems.
Understanding of Space Domain Awareness, Space Control and directed energy technologies.
Experience with cloud-native architectures, data pipelines, machine learning or AI-enabled systems.
Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance.
