Elemental Microanalysis - Data Engineer
Location: Preferred on-site in Okehampton, Devon (UK) or remote, based in the U.S., UK or Ireland
Salary: £38,000 to £59,000, depending on experience
Build and own the data warehouse that our $100M+ group of life science manufacturers will run on, from the CEO to the shop floor.
About Elemental Microanalysis
Elemental Microanalysis is a leading manufacturer of consumables for elemental analysers. From our purpose-built, ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 accredited facility in Okehampton, Devon, we supply thousands of products, from tin and silver capsules to reagents, quartzware, crucibles and reference materials, to laboratories worldwide, and have done since 1976.
We are part of a wider group of 13 scientific consumables businesses across the U.S., Canada, UK and Ireland, with combined revenues of more than $100 million. Backed by a long-term investment partner, the group is building the shared systems, processes and technology for its next stage of growth.
The role
The group's data sits across companies, sites and systems that largely run independently, ours included. We are building Nexus, a consolidated data warehouse that will be the single reliable source for Commercial, Manufacturing, Finance, Marketing and every other function across the group. This is a build role with real ownership from day one and a clear path to broader responsibility. You will report to the group's Global Director of Strategy & Corporate Development.
What you'll do
Lead the creation of production-grade, documented and stable data infrastructure.
Build and maintain pipelines that bring data in cleanly from ERP, CRM and shop floor systems, and keep it flowing as sources change.
Own the reporting layer: shape raw data into usable models and reporting that ties the numbers to how the group's companies operate.
Take over development and day-to-day maintenance of the system, working alongside current technical leadership.
Turn requirements from the group CEO and leadership team into working code.
Our stack
Fivetran lands ERP data into Databricks on Azure, where a medallion model (bronze, silver, gold) governed by Unity Catalog is built in SQL and Python and deployed from GitHub. The gold layer is mirrored nightly into Azure PostgreSQL and served through an Entra-gated web portal.
What you'll bring
A bachelor's degree
Experience building or substantially contributing to production data pipelines or a data warehouse
Experience shaping raw data into models and reporting that business users rely on
Experience maintaining a live data system: monitoring, fixing breaks and handling source changes
A track record of translating business requirements into working technical solutions
Strong SQL and Python
Hands-on Databricks experience
Dimensional modeling and ELT pipeline design
CI/CD, Git and GitHub branching workflows
AI-native development using tools such as Codex or Claude Code
Nice to have
A degree in computer science, data science, engineering, maths or a related field
Databricks or Microsoft data engineering certification
Experience owning a data platform end to end
ERP, CRM or shop floor data experience
Manufacturing, life science or multi-site business experience
Finance and accounting literacy
Fivetran, Azure PostgreSQL or Entra ID experience
Who thrives here
Disposition matters more than background. You'll do well here if you have:
An ownership instinct. You treat the system as yours, including the unglamorous maintenance that keeps it trustworthy.
Comfort with ambiguity. You make progress before every requirement is defined and ask the right questions as you go.
A bias toward solutions that work. You take an 80/20 approach, then refine and harden where needed.
Clear communication. You explain data to non-technical colleagues, from the CEO to site teams, and document your work so others can rely on it.
You may have come from data or analytics engineering, software engineering, or a technical analyst role where you've outgrown spreadsheets and BI tools.
Location and travel
Ideally based at our site in Okehampton, Devon (UK), or at another group site in Stevensville, Michigan (US) or Strathaven (Scotland). Remote working in the U.S., UK or Ireland is also open. Occasional domestic and international travel, under 10% of the time. You must have the right to work in the country of employment.
How we use your data
Our hiring panel works across the U.S., UK and Ireland and includes a representative of the group's long-term investment partner. By applying, you acknowledge that Elemental Microanalysis, its sister companies in the group and the group's investment partner will share and review your application in those countries, including the United States.
We use your data only to assess you for this role, on the basis of our legitimate interest in recruiting. We keep it for 12 months after the process closes, then delete it. To access, correct or delete your data, contact agabriel@alchemyag.co.uk.
If you meet most of the essentials, apply: we are hiring for trajectory, not for a checklist.
