About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

ShellMate (https://shellmate.net) is building an AI-powered infrastructure workspace that helps developers and DevOps teams securely manage, monitor, and troubleshoot their infrastructure from one place.
ShellMate brings SSH, SFTP, AWS Systems Manager (SSM), terminals, Docker, databases, Redis, logs, Git, and other infrastructure tools into a unified desktop workspace. Our goal is to simplify complex infrastructure workflows while making security, access control, and operational reliability core parts of the product.
We are expanding our AI capabilities to help engineers investigate production issues, analyze system behavior, and resolve infrastructure problems through intelligent, evidence-driven workflows. Our platform is built around zero-trust security, zero-knowledge credential protection, role-based access control, and detailed audit trails.
We’re looking for a technically strong engineer who wants to solve challenging problems at the intersection of backend engineering, infrastructure automation, security, and AI-powered operations.
Role Description
This is a full-time, remote Backend Engineer role focused on building and improving the core systems behind ShellMate.
You will design, develop, and maintain reliable backend services and infrastructure integrations using Rust and Go. You’ll work on security-sensitive execution workflows, infrastructure connectivity, distributed operations, and the backend systems that support ShellMate’s AI-powered SRE capabilities.
You will also contribute to the design of AI agent execution systems, tool orchestration, approval and authorization policies, and investigation workflows that help engineers diagnose real-world infrastructure problems safely.
This role is hands-on and engineering-focused. You’ll participate in architecture decisions, write production-quality code, review implementations, investigate difficult technical issues, and improve system performance, security, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain backend services using Rust and Go.
Build reliable infrastructure integrations for SSH, SFTP, AWS SSM, Docker, databases, and other operational tools.
Develop secure command-execution workflows with appropriate authentication, authorization, approval controls, and auditability.
Build and improve AI-powered infrastructure investigation and SRE workflows, including tool orchestration, evidence gathering, failure handling, and controlled remediation.
Design robust APIs, asynchronous processing, and concurrent systems that remain reliable under real-world operating conditions.
Implement security-conscious credential handling and help maintain ShellMate’s zero-trust and zero-knowledge security architecture.
Improve observability, error handling, performance, testing, and production reliability.
Collaborate on technical architecture, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD improvements.
Investigate complex bugs across backend services, desktop integrations, and infrastructure environments.
Take ownership of technical problems from investigation through implementation, testing, and production verification.
Required
Strong backend engineering experience building production services, APIs, and distributed or service-oriented systems.
Professional experience with Rust and/or Go, with a solid understanding of concurrency, error handling, testing, and performance optimization.
Strong fundamentals in operating systems, Linux, networking, processes, and system-level debugging.
Experience with API design, databases, asynchronous operations, and reliable service architecture.
Practical understanding of authentication, authorization, secure coding, and sensitive-data handling.
Experience with Git, automated testing, code reviews, and CI/CD workflows.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate issues across multiple system components.
Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions, and communicate effectively in a remote engineering environment.
Nice to Have
Experience with both Rust and Go.
Hands-on experience with SSH, SFTP, AWS SSM, Docker, Kubernetes, or other infrastructure-management technologies.
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, networking, Linux administration, observability, and production incident investigation.
Experience building developer tools, DevOps platforms, infrastructure automation, or security-focused software.
Experience with AI agents, LLM tool calling, agent orchestration, policy enforcement, or AI-assisted troubleshooting.
Familiarity with secrets management, encryption, zero-trust architecture, or zero-knowledge security designs.
Experience building desktop applications or integrating native system-level functionality with backend services.
A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is welcome, but equivalent practical experience and strong engineering skills matter more.
What We’re Looking For
We value engineers who enjoy understanding how systems work beneath the surface, are comfortable tackling unfamiliar technical challenges, and care about building secure, dependable software.
You should be comfortable taking ownership of complex problems, challenging assumptions, and turning technical ideas into tested, production-ready implementations.
If you’re interested in backend systems, infrastructure engineering, security, and the next generation of AI-powered developer tools, we’d love to hear from you.
