About The Role
We are seeking a talented and imaginative Visual Artist to join our creative team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in shaping the visual identity of Chess.com by developing engaging, playful, and innovative art assets that resonate with our diverse user base. Your primary focus will be on creating illustrative and vector-based artwork that enhances our product and branding initiatives, transitioning our visual style from more serious to more playful and dynamic. You will collaborate closely with product managers, animators, motion designers, and engineers to bring your concepts to life, contributing to the overall user experience and community engagement. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the visual direction of a globally recognized platform, blending creativity with strategic design to foster a fun and educational environment for chess players worldwide.
Qualifications
Grand Master command of designing vector artwork with proficiency in tools like Adobe Illustrator and Figma
Excellent 2D art and illustration skills
A keen eye for composition, perspective, and color theory
Experience creating a variety of art assets including environments, objects, storyboards, characters, and clothing
Strong imagination and creativity aligned with a cohesive creative vision
Ability to replicate established art styles while maintaining flexibility for diverse styles
Minimum of 3+ years of experience working within a gaming environment
Ability to learn new technical skills and concepts swiftly
Effective time management skills with a proven track record of meeting deadlines in fast-paced settings
Strong collaboration skills within small teams and larger product groups, with autonomy in managing pipeline deliverables
Portfolio demonstrating relevant skills and experience
Responsibilities
Contribute to the development and refinement of Chess.com’s creative vision and visual style, helping to shift towards a more playful, fun, and challenging aesthetic
Create high-quality illustrative assets that enhance the user experience and bring joy to players on their chess journey
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, animation, motion design, and engineering to animate and integrate visual assets effectively
Design a wide range of art assets such as environments, characters, objects, storyboards, and clothing to support various initiatives
Maintain consistency with established art styles while also exploring new creative directions
Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute innovative ideas to improve visual storytelling and user engagement
Adapt quickly to evolving project requirements and technical constraints
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of assets
