Our goal is to make compliance practical, accessible, and affordable through technology-enabled solutions and expert consulting.
About the Role
ComplyZen is seeking a Data Privacy Consultant based in Mumbai to support client engagements involving data privacy compliance, privacy risk assessments, regulatory gap analysis, documentation, and implementation of privacy controls.
This is a remote-first role. However, the candidate must be willing and available to visit client offices when required for stakeholder discussions, assessments, workshops, implementation support, and compliance reviews.
The consultant will work closely with clients and ComplyZen's internal consulting, product, and information security teams to translate regulatory requirements into practical, implementable privacy controls. The role requires strong analytical skills, regulatory awareness, documentation capabilities, and the ability to manage multiple client engagements independently.
Key Responsibilities1. Data Privacy Compliance and Assessments
Conduct privacy compliance assessments, regulatory gap analyses, and data protection maturity reviews.
Support client readiness assessments for India's DPDPA, GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other applicable privacy regulations.
Identify compliance gaps, assess privacy risks, and develop practical remediation plans.
Assist in identifying applicable regulatory obligations based on client business activities, geography, and data processing practices.
2. Privacy Documentation and Governance
Draft, review, and maintain privacy notices, privacy policies, data retention and deletion procedures, data handling guidelines, and internal privacy standards.
Support the preparation and maintenance of Records of Processing Activities (RoPA), data inventories, data flow documentation, and data classification records.
Assist with Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), privacy impact assessments, and legitimate-interest or other relevant assessments where applicable.
Review data processing agreements, vendor privacy requirements, consent documentation, and data subject request procedures.
Support the development of privacy governance frameworks, roles, responsibilities, and operating procedures.
3. Implementation and Risk Management
Help clients implement privacy controls and address identified compliance gaps.
Coordinate with IT, information security, legal, HR, business, and vendor management teams to operationalize privacy requirements.
Support third-party privacy risk assessments and reviews of cloud-based and SaaS environments.
Assist with privacy incident response procedures, breach assessment workflows, escalation processes, and regulatory notification readiness.
Track remediation activities and maintain evidence of compliance.
4. Client Engagement and Site Visits
Conduct remote client meetings, stakeholder interviews, and compliance workshops.
Visit client locations in Mumbai and other agreed locations, as required by project scope.
Facilitate onsite assessments, evidence collection, awareness sessions, and implementation reviews.
Present assessment findings, explain regulatory requirements, and communicate actionable recommendations to client stakeholders.
Manage assigned engagements, deliverables, timelines, and client communications independently.
5. Compliance Platform and Internal Collaboration
Use ComplyZen's compliance management platform to track assessments, risks, policies, controls, evidence, and remediation activities.
Work with internal product and security teams to improve compliance workflows, framework mappings, templates, and reporting.
Support the creation and maintenance of reusable assessment questionnaires, privacy templates, implementation guides, and client deliverables.
Monitor relevant regulatory developments and help translate changes into practical client guidance.
Contribute to internal knowledge management and continuous improvement of consulting methodologies.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Law, Information Security, Computer Science, IT, Business, or a related discipline.
Practical knowledge of data privacy, data protection principles, privacy governance, and regulatory compliance.
Familiarity with India's DPDPA and GDPR; working knowledge of CCPA/CPRA or other international privacy regulations is an advantage.
Experience in privacy assessments, regulatory gap analysis, privacy documentation, risk assessments, audits, or compliance implementation.
Ability to develop and review privacy policies, notices, data retention procedures, data processing documentation, and privacy controls.
Understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals, information security controls, third-party risk, cloud environments, and SaaS security.
Strong documentation, analytical, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and work independently in a remote environment.
Willingness to travel to client locations when required.
Preferred Qualifications
Approximately 2–5 years of relevant experience in data privacy, privacy consulting, information security GRC, or regulatory compliance.
Experience supporting DPDPA or GDPR implementation projects.
Familiarity with DPIAs, RoPA, DSAR processes, consent management, vendor assessments, and privacy incident management.
Knowledge of ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC 2, or related security and privacy frameworks.
Relevant certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPP/A, CIPM, CIPT, ISO 27701, or equivalent qualifications are an advantage.
Experience working with GRC, privacy management, or compliance automation platforms is desirable.
Work Location and Travel Conditions
The candidate must be based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and available to attend client meetings in person when required.
The role is remote-first; daily office attendance is not required.
Client site visits will depend on project requirements, assessment schedules, and client commitments.
Travel outside Mumbai may occasionally be required, subject to project needs and prior coordination.
Travel and expense reimbursement arrangements will follow ComplyZen's applicable company policy.
