About BAFPL
BAFPL manufactures premium lightweight aluminium forged, precision-machined and anodised components for demanding domestic and export automotive customers, including premium two-wheeler applications. Consistent quality, repeatable process capability, strong development-to-production handover and customer confidence are essential.
Role Objective
Lead BAFPL’s technology, R&D, engineering, design, process development and NPD-to-commercialisation architecture. Build robust, scalable, capable manufacturing technology and an accountable technical organisation. The CTO owns technical readiness and engineering outcomes; independent Quality assurance remains with the Quality function.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Strategy & R&D
· Create a 3–5-year technology roadmap covering aluminium alloys, forging, tooling, heat treatment, CNC machining, surface treatment, inspection and digital manufacturing.
· Build an applied R&D pipeline: material/process trials, feasibility, prototypes, validation, scale-up and documented learning; prioritise projects by customer value, quality, productivity and ROI.
· Own technology selection, technical benchmarking, capex justification and post-implementation benefit realisation.
Engineering, Design & Process Architecture
· Lead Design & Development, Tool/Die Engineering, Manufacturing/Process Engineering and technical standards; establish clear decision rights across functions.
· Own technical feasibility, design-for-manufacture, tolerance strategy, die life, forging flow, machining sequence, process windows, tool/fixture/gauge design and process change governance.
· Institutionalise DFMEA where applicable, PFMEA, process flow, Control Plans, CTQ cascade, process capability and engineering lessons learned.
NPD: Sample to Commercialisation
· Own the technical industrialisation system from RFQ/feasibility → concept/design → prototype/sample → tooling/trials → process validation → PPAP/customer approval → SOP → safe launch → stable mass production.
· Create cross-functional stage gates with documented exit criteria, accountable owners, open-risk register, customer sign-offs and a formal handover to Manufacturing.
· Ensure Run-at-Rate, MSA, Cp/Cpk or justified alternative capability evidence, process stability, operator readiness, traceability and change control before release.
Technology-led Quality & Customer Excellence
· Be accountable for engineering/process readiness and prevention of design- and NPD-originated defects; partner with an independent Quality Head for gate assurance, customer protection and CAPA verification.
· Lead technical RCA on recurring forging, heat-treatment, machining and anodising issues, including surface appearance, shade variation, peeling, spots, dents and dimensional variation.
· Drive visual-inspection digitisation, camera/lighting/measurement feasibility, traceability, poka-yoke, SPC, connected machines and actionable shop-floor visual management.
Organisation, Stakeholders & Capability
· Build and coach leaders in Design, Tooling, R&D, NPD and Process Engineering; identify skill gaps and succession capability.
· Work with Manufacturing Head on production process ownership, Quality Head on independent assurance, and CEO/MD on strategic priorities and risk acceptance.
· Own technical reviews, supplier/technology partnerships, IP/document control and disciplined project governance.
Key Result Areas / KPIs
· On-time and first-time-right technical launch / PPAP readiness
· 90-day post-SOP process stability, new-product FPY and design/NPD-originated escapes
· Process capability achievement at handover and critical open-risk closure
· Technology-project ROI, die life, OEE/throughput contribution and COPQ reduction
· Engineering change compliance, R&D milestones and technical succession readiness
Qualification & Experience
· B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Metallurgy, Manufacturing, Production or related engineering; M.Tech/MBA desirable
· Typically 20+ years in precision automotive/engineering manufacturing, including 7+ years leading multi-disciplinary engineering/NPD teams
· Must demonstrate personally led product/process industrialisation and sustained commercial-scale outcomes
· Strong preference for aluminium forging plus machining; anodising/surface-finish and premium OEM exposure highly desirable
Technical / Hard Skills – Must Have
· Aluminium forging and die/process engineering; CNC machining and industrialisation; heat-treatment and surface-treatment interface
· Technology roadmap, applied R&D, engineering economics and capital-project execution
· APQP/PPAP, PFMEA/DFMEA interface, Control Plans, MSA, SPC, capability and validation
· Cross-functional launch governance, process transfer, engineering change management and customer technical communication
· Structured DOE/RCA, equipment/tooling capability, automation and digital/vision-inspection business cases
Skills / Knowledge That Can Be Learned in 3–6 Months
· BAFPL-specific alloys, part families, OEM-specific technical specifications and internal digital platforms
· Existing vendor ecosystem, plant equipment configuration and internal organisational workflows
Leadership / Soft Skills & Cultural Fit
· Humble, technically credible, decisive and curious; high standards without ego
· Builds teams and systems rather than personal dependence; resolves conflict through evidence
· Balances speed, cost, risk and engineering rigour; challenges senior stakeholders respectfully
Indicative DISC / Assessment Fit
Prefer strong analytical/conscientious (C) orientation with sufficient decisiveness (D), collaboration/influence (I) and stability/coaching (S). DISC is not a selection filter or validated predictor on its own; assess actual behaviour using structured interviews, case exercises and references.
First 90 Days – Expected Deliverables
· 0–30 days: assess technical organisation, technology gaps, top recurring engineering-originated defects and 5–10 recent launches
· 31–60 days: establish technical stage-gate/RACI, capability validation standards and prioritised technology roadmap
· 61–90 days: pilot gates on live NPD, launch two technical improvement projects and present capex/skills plan
Evidence Required During Selection
Ask for 3–5 personally led projects, with baseline, individual contribution, technical decisions, measured outcome and sustained results. Validate claims through a practical BAFPL case and professional references. Assess how the candidate handles disagreement, incomplete evidence and cross-functional ownership.
Governance Principle
Functional owners remain accountable for the quality of the output they create. Quality independently assures customer requirements, stage-gate evidence, process compliance and customer protection. Critical risks and exceptions require documented management decisions; no silent transfer of open risks to mass production.
