About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Role Summary
The Director of Business Technology is a hands-on engineering role focused on building, integrating, automating, and supporting the systems used to run the business. The role will work across CRM, ERP, data and analytics, billing, workflow automation, and related enterprise applications. Success in the near term will be measured based on strong technical delivery. As the function matures, the role may grow into broader ownership of roadmap, governance, vendors, and team development. This role is not intended for candidates whose recent experience is primarily people or vendor management.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS ROLE IS FOR A PORTFOLIO COMPANY OF TENEX.
Technical Skills & Responsibilities
Hands-on software engineering. Personally design, build, test, deploy, and support lightweight applications, scripts, services, and workflow automations. Working proficiency in Python or a comparable general-purpose language is expected.
SQL and data engineering. Write performant SQL; work directly with relational and analytical data models; build and troubleshoot transformations, pipelines, reconciliations, and reporting datasets; understand dimensional modeling, data quality, lineage, and query performance.
APIs and systems integration. Design, build, and troubleshoot integrations across SaaS platforms and internal systems, including authentication, transformation logic, retries, error handling, logging, monitoring, and durable production support.
Enterprise applications. Serve as a hands-on technical owner for CRM, ERP, analytics/data platforms, billing, and related systems. Configure and extend platforms using native workflows, custom objects, APIs, scripts, and platform-specific development tools.
Architecture and troubleshooting. Understand systems of record, application boundaries, interfaces, dependencies, and data flows; diagnose root causes across code, databases, APIs, scheduled jobs, permissions, and vendor platforms.
Engineering discipline. Use source control, testing, code review, documentation, release management, secure development practices, and pragmatic build-vs-buy-vs-configure judgment. Review and challenge technical work delivered by vendors or contractors.
Leadership Skills & Responsibilities
Project and backlog management. Turn ambiguous business needs into clear requirements, technical designs, executable workstreams, and prioritized backlogs. Maintain simple milestones, owners, dependencies, risks, decision logs, and status reporting through implementation and stabilization.
Vendor management and selection. Determine when work should be handled directly, delegated internally, or sourced externally. Scope work, evaluate technical approaches, manage implementation partners, and hold vendors accountable for quality, timelines, documentation, and knowledge transfer.
Business partnership. Work directly with Finance, Operations, Sales, and other functions to understand workflows, challenge assumptions, identify bottlenecks, and translate business problems into pragmatic technology solutions.
Executive communication. Communicate technical tradeoffs, project status, resource needs, risks, and decisions clearly to senior leaders without unnecessary technical jargon.
Ownership and growth. Operate initially as a highly hands-on individual contributor with strong ownership of delivery. Over time, contribute more heavily to roadmap, governance, mentoring, hiring, and team leadership as business needs justify additional resources.
Candidate Profile
8+ years of demonstrated hands-on experience across software engineering, data engineering, enterprise applications, or solutions engineering.
Experience delivering in a fast-paced project-based environment (consulting or equivalent) required.
Strong SQL and API/integration fundamentals are required; experience with CRM/ERP platforms and modern cloud/SaaS environments strongly preferred.
Zoho, NetSuite, Snowflake, or comparable platforms are helpful but not required.
