Position Summary:
Ames Construction is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Superintendent to oversee field operations on large-scale civil construction projects. This role is responsible for managing daily site activities, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and coordinate all field personnel, subcontractors, and construction activities
Plan and manage daily operations, including scheduling, manpower, equipment, and materials
Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
Monitor project progress and adjust plans as needed to meet deadlines and budgets
Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, and clients to ensure project success
Review plans, specifications, and submittals to ensure work is performed correctly
Conduct regular site inspections to maintain quality control standards
Lead and participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and jobsite briefings
Maintain accurate daily reports, logs, and documentation
Identify and resolve field issues proactively to minimize delays and cost impacts
Qualifications:
5–10+ years of experience in heavy civil construction (earthwork, structures, utilities, paving, etc.)
Proven experience in a Superintendent or leadership role
Strong knowledge of construction methods, equipment, and safety practices
Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and schedules
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
OSHA 30 certification preferred
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required
Preferred Experience:
Experience with DOT, municipal, or large infrastructure projects
Background working with unions and managing union labor
Familiarity with project management and scheduling software
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Ability to walk on uneven terrain and stand for extended periods
Ability to lift to 50 pounds as needed
