SkyPilot is building the future of multicloud AI infrastructure, enabling AI workloads to run across different cloud providers in a portable, cost-optimized, and highly available way.
Founded in 2024 by UC Berkeley PhDs and professors, SkyPilot is commercializing its open-source platform, which has earned 9,500+ GitHub stars and contributions from 200+ developers.
The platform is deployed at hundreds of companies, including Fortune 500 organizations and leading AI companies such as Shopify, Redis, Abridge, and Applied Compute. Adoption grew by more than 600% in 2025, reflecting strong demand for multicloud AI infrastructure.
Our founding team and engineers bring experience from leading technology companies, including Databricks, Google, Crusoe, ByteDance, and PingCAP.
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Software Engineer to help build SkyPilot's commercial cloud platform from the ground up.
You'll play a key role in designing and implementing the platform that powers a new multicloud AI experience. This is an opportunity for a hands-on engineer who enjoys building production-grade SaaS and cloud infrastructure from zero to one in a startup environment.
What You'll Do
- Architect and build SkyPilot's commercial cloud platform from the ground up.
- Design and scale control-plane and data-plane systems.
- Build core platform services, including tenant and user management, APIs, monitoring, and alerting.
- Develop reliable, secure, production-grade services using a cloud-native technology stack.
- Make architectural decisions that balance scalability, reliability, security, and simplicity.
- Collaborate with a highly technical team to shape the future of multicloud AI infrastructure.
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of experience in backend or platform engineering.
- Proven experience building a SaaS platform from zero to one at a VC-backed startup, ideally during its Seed-to-Series C stage.
- Experience building the platform layer of a multi-tenant SaaS or cloud product, including control planes, authentication/RBAC, tenant management, API gateways, billing, or metering.
- Strong Go experience preferred.
- Production experience with Kubernetes is required.
- Experience with gRPC, PostgreSQL, and Terraform.
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering from a top-30 CS program, or a strong professional track record at a leading infrastructure company or well-funded infrastructure startup.
- Evidence of strong engineering impact in one of your two most recent roles.
Nice to Have
- Experience joining a startup as an early employee (within its first 30 employees) and helping it scale.
- Experience building cloud platforms or infrastructure products used in production.
Who Will Thrive in This Role?
We're especially interested in engineers who have built and shipped core SaaS or cloud platform capabilities—not simply maintained existing infrastructure.
Experience at companies such as Databricks, Crusoe, Modal, Anyscale, Runpod, Baseten, Fireworks AI, Lambda Labs, Temporal, Cloudflare, Snowflake, HashiCorp, or other leading cloud and infrastructure startups may be relevant.
Important: This role is focused on platform engineering and zero-to-one product development, rather than traditional DevOps, operations-focused SRE, search, analytics, database internals, fintech, or low-level systems engineering.
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid role based in San Mateo, California, with four days in the office and Fridays remote. Candidates should be able to work onsite or be willing to relocate.
SkyPilot is open to visa transfers, including OPT and H-1B transfers.
