Design First Engineer
Location: Bengaluru, in-person
Team: Growth
We’re looking for a design-first engineer, someone who can move comfortably between Figma, user journeys, code, analytics and product decisions.
This is not a role where design hands over screens and engineering builds them.
You’ll be expected to understand the problem, research the context, design the experience, build it, track how people use it and continuously improve it.
At LIT, you’ll work across both sides of the product:
The student/customer experience — landing pages, application journeys, program discovery, lead funnels and digital touchpoints.
The internal LIT experience — tools, workflows and systems used by admissions, marketing, program and operations teams.
What you'll work on
You’ll help build and scale LIT’s digital product ecosystem across the website, platform and internal tools.
Your work could include:
Designing and building high-converting landing pages for new programs and campaigns.
Understanding acquisition funnels and improving the journey from ad → website → enquiry → application → enrolment.
Mapping complex user flows before jumping into UI.
Improving information architecture, navigation and product usability.
Building reusable frontend systems and components that allow LIT to launch faster as we scale.
Creating internal tools that simplify how different LIT teams operate.
Instrumenting products with analytics so we understand where users enter, drop off, convert and struggle.
Running experiments across copy, interaction, page structure and user flows.
Talking to students, leads and internal teams to understand what needs to be built.
Translating qualitative research and quantitative data into product decisions.
Working closely with marketing, admissions and program teams rather than operating as an isolated engineering function.
You should be good at -
Design
You understand that good UI is only one layer of good product design.
You should be comfortable with:
UI design and visual hierarchy
UX and interaction design
User journey mapping
Information architecture
Responsive design
Design systems
Prototyping
User research and interviews
Context building before designing
Turning ambiguous problems into clear product flows
A strong eye for typography, spacing, motion and visual detail matters.
Engineering
You should be able to take your designs all the way to production.
Ideally, you’re comfortable with:
React
Next.js
TypeScript
HTML / CSS
Component-based frontend architecture
APIs
Databases and backend integrations
Authentication and user states
Git / GitHub
Modern AI-assisted development tools
Experience with tools such as Supabase, Vercel, Tailwind, ShadCN, Cursor or similar stacks is useful.
You don’t need to be a hardcore backend infrastructure engineer, but you should understand enough of the full product stack to build functional products independently.
Product + Growth
This role sits unusually close to growth.
You should understand — or be excited to learn — how digital products influence business outcomes.
That includes:
Conversion funnels
Landing page optimisation
Lead generation
Conversion rate optimisation
A/B testing
Event tracking
Product analytics
Funnel analysis
Drop-off analysis
Attribution basics
Behavioural analytics
You should be able to ask questions like:
Where are users dropping off?
What information are they looking for before they enquire?
Why is this page converting worse than another one?
Is the problem the interface, the copy, the traffic or the underlying journey?
You’ll probably enjoy this role if:
You care about design enough to notice when something is 4px off.
You care about engineering enough to build things properly rather than just prototype them.
You like figuring out why something should exist before deciding what it should look like.
You can work with incomplete briefs and turn ambiguity into structure.
You naturally think in systems rather than isolated screens.
You’re comfortable speaking directly with users and internal teams.
You’re curious about how design affects growth and business metrics.
You like shipping quickly, measuring what happened and iterating.
We care much more about the quality of what you’ve built than the number of years you’ve worked.
Within your first year, you should have helped LIT:
Build a faster and more scalable web ecosystem.
Significantly improve key enquiry and application funnels.
Create reusable systems for launching new programs and landing pages.
Improve visibility into how users behave across LIT’s digital products.
Reduce friction in internal workflows through better tools.
Establish a stronger product/design system across LIT.
Turn the website from a collection of pages into a continuously improving growth product.
When applying, show us things you have actually built.
We’d especially love to see projects where you:
Designed and coded the product yourself.
Improved an existing user journey.
Built a landing page that had a measurable business outcome.
Used research or analytics to change a product decision.
Built an internal tool or workflow.
Created a design system or reusable component architecture.
