Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, releases, and supports mechanical systems for Berkshire Grey robotic picking products and customer deployments. This hands-on role spans product development, manufacturing readiness, documentation, and deployment support.
The engineer works closely with Hardware Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Controls, Program Management, and field teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, clearly documented, and ready to build, install, and support.
Essential Responsibilities
Develop and release mechanical designs from concept through validation, manufacturing readiness, and deployment.
Independently plan and execute moderately complex, multi-component mechanical design and implementation work, including defining the approach when requirements or implementation details are incomplete.
Create and maintain CAD models, production drawings, bills of material, and engineering changes.
Apply DFM/DFA principles to improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, quality, cost, and serviceability.
Partner with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and other Engineering teams to transition designs into production and resolve build issues.
Support prototype, production, and customer-site builds; incorporate lessons learned into design and documentation updates.
Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including work instructions, installation documentation, design overviews, and hardware checklists.
Define and document mechanical and electrical integration details, including interfaces, cable routing, hardware, and grounding requirements as applicable.
Lead or contribute to design reviews; communicate design intent, technical risks, tradeoffs, and open issues to cross-functional stakeholders.
Identify, communicate, and mitigate technical risks within assigned work, balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, schedule, and deployment needs.
Investigate design, manufacturing, and field issues; identify root causes and implement practical corrective actions.
Support product-improvement and cost-reduction initiatives through design changes, documentation improvements, and cross-functional execution.
Contribute to customer-site implementation and deployment readiness as needed.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Demonstrated experience taking mechanical designs through CAD, drawing release, BOM creation, engineering change control, and manufacturing support.
Proficiency with 3D CAD, engineering drawings, BOM management, and PLM/change-control systems.
Demonstrated ability to work mostly independently on ambiguous, cross-functional engineering problems and bring them to a documented, production-ready resolution.
Ability to work directly with Manufacturing during builds, distinguish between design-intent questions and design issues, and drive appropriate resolution.
Strong technical writing, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate clearly across Engineering, Manufacturing, and program teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with robotics, warehouse automation, material-handling equipment, or industrial automation.
Experience supporting manufacturing builds and customer-site deployments.
Familiarity with Omnify, NetSuite, and ECO release processes.
Experience with industrial cable routing, grounding, and electrical/mechanical installation documentation.
Experience with conveyor systems, sheet-metal assemblies, aluminum framing, and related industrial components.
