Senior Backend Software Engineer – Python & Platform Services
About The Role
Our client is an AI-native analytics company helping pharmaceutical and life sciences organizations unlock the value of their commercial and medical data.
As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will design, build, and own backend services powering analytics products, including APIs, data access layers, caching, and asynchronous processing. You will work with Python, FastAPI and Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Celery, collaborating with Engineering, Data, Product, and Delivery teams to ensure services are reliable, scalable, and performant in production.
Experience with Generative AI and LLM-based applications is a strong plus.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Development & API Design
Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using Python, FastAPI, and/or Django.
Define API contracts, including versioning, pagination, error handling, and backward compatibility.
Build maintainable, modular, and testable applications with clear service boundaries.
Database & Data Management
Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, indexes, queries, and database migrations.
Understand transactions, isolation levels, locking, and connection pooling.
Ensure database performance, consistency, and reliability as application traffic grows.
Caching & Asynchronous Processing
Implement caching strategies using Redis, including invalidation, TTLs, and eviction policies.
Develop background and scheduled tasks using Celery.
Implement retries, idempotency, rate limiting, and failure recovery for asynchronous workloads.
Reliability & Performance
Improve application performance through profiling, load testing, and timeout management.
Troubleshoot production issues and drive root-cause resolution.
Implement observability using metrics, logs, and distributed tracing.
Engineering Excellence
Participate in architecture discussions, technical reviews, and design decisions.
Follow effective Git workflows, code review practices, and version control standards.
Mentor engineers and contribute to improving engineering quality and best practices.
Required Qualifications
6–9 years of hands-on backend engineering experience in a product or SaaS environment.
Strong production-level Python skills, including concurrency, asynchronous programming, typing, and testing.
Expertise in FastAPI and/or Django, including middleware, authentication, dependency injection, validation, and ORM concepts.
Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, transactions, and connection pooling.
Practical experience with Redis caching, data structures, invalidation strategies, and broker use cases.
Production experience with Celery, including task design, retries, idempotency, and worker scaling.
Strong Git knowledge, including branching, rebasing, merging, and collaborative code reviews.
Solid understanding of API design, system reliability, and failure-handling strategies.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional engineering and product teams.
Good to Have
Experience with Generative AI, LLMs, LangChain, LangGraph, or agentic workflows.
Knowledge of RAG pipelines, vector databases such as pgvector, Pinecone, Qdrant, or Weaviate, and embedding strategies.
Experience with prompt engineering, LLM evaluation, and cost and latency optimization.
Familiarity with Docker, containerized deployments, and CI/CD pipelines.
Experience with AWS or Azure cloud platforms.
Knowledge of observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry, or OpenTelemetry.
Exposure to event-driven architecture using Kafka or RabbitMQ.
Experience building high-traffic, data-intensive systems or multi-tenant enterprise SaaS applications.
Experience in pharma tech, life sciences, healthcare, or health data products.
