About the role

Company Description
duhnooz is an independent media brand founded by Nicholas Doucot, grounded in a working-class perspective and a belief that people deserve dignity, honest information, and answers from those with power. We cover work, money, culture, faith, politics, and the institutions that shape everyday life.
Our editorial approach is curious, skeptical, and willing to question our own assumptions. We take ordinary people’s experiences seriously, examine the distance between public promises and actual practices, and make complicated issues understandable. Our values guide the questions we ask; evidence guides what we report.
Role Description
We’re seeking a remote Freelance Journalist to pitch and produce original reporting, interviews, features, and clearly identified commentary for duhnooz.
We want someone who notices a story in an everyday frustration, asks useful follow-up questions, and investigates before drawing conclusions. Assignments may explore workplace conditions, affordability, institutional accountability, community issues, or the ways larger decisions affect people’s daily lives.
Responsibilities include:
Pitching focused stories with a clear reason readers should care.
Researching claims, interviewing sources, and verifying information.
Writing with clarity, personality, and respect for the people involved.
Examining competing explanations and giving subjects a fair opportunity to respond to criticism.
Collaborating on edits and meeting agreed deadlines.
Adapting work for social posts, video scripts, audio, or on-camera commentary when agreed.
Clearly distinguishing reporting, analysis, and opinion.
This is a freelance opportunity, with scope, deadlines, compensation, and payment terms agreed before each assignment.
Qualifications
Strong writing skills and the ability to explain complicated subjects in familiar language.
Sound research habits, including fact-checking, source evaluation, and tracing claims to their original context.
Confidence conducting interviews and asking direct, thoughtful follow-up questions.
An interest in working-class experiences, public accountability, and stories that receive limited attention.
Fair editorial judgment, including a willingness to question an appealing argument and revise a conclusion when evidence changes.
Respect for confidentiality, accurate quotation, corrections, and transparent sourcing.
Ability to work independently, communicate clearly, and respond constructively to edits.
Familiarity with digital publishing tools; audio, video, or photography skills are welcome.
Published clips, student journalism, community reporting, independent projects, or other relevant portfolio samples. A journalism degree is welcome but not required.
