Work remotely from Nepal, collaborating directly with Australian leadership and a distributed team. About the role:
We are looking for a capable mid-level backend developer to build APIs, integrations, data processing solutions and automation, and deploy them to Microsoft Azure. You’ll own clearly scoped work from implementation through testing and release, following agreed architecture and development practices. This role focuses on backend development, with no frontend development requirement.
What you will do:
Develop and maintain backend services, REST APIs, third-party integrations and scheduled or queue-driven processing.
Implement data models, queries, validation, authentication and clear error handling.
Deploy and troubleshoot Azure Functions and supporting Azure resources using agreed patterns.
Maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated tests and environment configuration; investigate build and deployment failures.
Handle API pagination, rate limits, retries and duplicate processing safely, with effective logging and monitoring.
Submit tested pull requests with clear evidence and documentation, identify potential risks and raise focused questions early.
Ownership expectations:
You will independently deliver defined backend features, from implementation and testing through deployment and release verification, with senior guidance for architectural changes and higher-risk decisions. Peer review and agreed production approvals remain part of our delivery process.
Skills and experience:
Demonstrated commercial backend development experience, typically 3+ years, with evidence of independently delivering production features.
Strong programming fundamentals and practical expertise in a backend ecosystem such as Python, TypeScript/Node.js or C#/.NET.
Hands-on Azure experience, including deploying and troubleshooting Azure Functions and supporting storage or messaging services.
Experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps, including automated tests, configuration and deployment troubleshooting.
Practical SQL and data modelling skills, REST API integration, Git, pull requests and automated testing.
Understanding of least-privilege access, managed identities, secrets management and application monitoring.
Clear written and spoken English, reliable remote communication and the ability to explain your own implementation and technical decisions.
Useful additional experience:
Infrastructure as code using Bicep or Terraform; Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Graph integrations; data ingestion pipelines and operational automation.
AI tools and independent engineering:
We use AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day work. You must also be able to design, write, debug and explain code independently, without AI assistance. You remain responsible for the correctness, security and maintainability of everything you submit, including AI-generated code.
Our assessment includes a practical coding and debugging exercise completed without AI assistance. Standard technical documentation is allowed.
Working Arrangements:
Work fully remotely from Nepal, collaborating directly with an Australian team on varied projects and developing your technical skills and ownership. Collaboration requires agreed overlap with Melbourne business hours; the exact schedule will be confirmed during recruitment.
