About the Role: Software Engineering Manager, Merchant Fulfillment
Location: Bangalore, India Team: Merchant Fulfillment
About the Team
The Merchant Fulfillment team is the "Engine Room" of Uber Eats. We own the mission-critical systems that power the entire Order Lifecycle—from the moment a customer hits "Place Order" to the moment the food arrives.
Our scope includes:
Uber Eats Orders (UEO): The tablet application used by millions of restaurants to accept orders, manage prep times, and track couriers in real-time.
BYOC (Bring Your Own Courier): The logistics platform that enables merchants (like Domino’s or local favorites) to deliver orders using their own fleets.
Reliability & Defects: The intelligence layer that prevents "bad orders" (cancellations, missing items) and automates financial disputes to save money for both Merchants and Uber.
About the Role
As an Engineering Manager in Merchant FUlfilment, you will lead a team of talented engineers building the critical infrastructure that the rest of the organization relies on.
You are a "Force Multiplier." Your systems will be used not just by merchants, but by 20+ other product teams at Uber who build on top of your platform. You will balance the need for feature velocity with extreme reliability, ensuring that as we scale to millions of merchants, our systems remain fast, secure, and rock-solid.
What You Will Do
Build Platforms, Not Just Features: Lead the design of scalable services (Backend) and architectures (Frontend) that serve as the standard for the entire org.
Drive Technical Strategy: Own the roadmap for critical merchant fulfillment domains. You will decide when to refactor, when to cache, and how to architect for the next 10x scale.
Operational Excellence: You will own the uptime and reliability of the Merchant Dashboard. You will drive initiatives to reduce latency, improve data freshness, and eliminate "White Screens of Death."
Lead & Mentor: Manage a high-performing team of 8-12 engineers. You will be responsible for their growth, performance management, and creating a culture of technical rigor and psychological safety.
Cross-Functional Influence: Partner with Product, Design, and other Engineering leads to prioritize "Tech Debt" and "Platform Capabilities" alongside business features.
Drive Reliability: Design systems for Offline-First resilience. You will solve hard problems related to eventual consistency, idempotency, and data synchronization between the Cloud and the Merchant’s Tablet.
What You Will Need
Basic Qualifications:
Experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience with 2+ years of direct people management.
System Design: Strong distributed systems knowledge. You understand the trade-offs in microservices architecture, data consistency, and caching strategies at scale.
Full-Stack Empathy: While you may lean Backend (Go/Java) or Frontend (React/Mobile), you are comfortable leading a team that operates across the stack.
Product mindset: Experience working with Operations/Business teams to reduce costs or improve efficiency. Not just "pure tech" leaders, but "business-tech" leaders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Logistics/Order Management: Experience building Order Management Systems (OMS), Supply Chain tech, or Real-time Logistics platforms.
Mobile-Backend Synergy: Experience designing APIs specifically for mobile/tablet clients (handling patchy networks, optimistic UI updates).
Fintech/Ledger: Experience with financial reconciliation or dispute systems (useful for the Post-Order charter).
