Job Description
As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you'll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world's toughest challenges.
We are seeking a Facilities Specialist II with strong hands-on HVAC and technical facilities experience to support the safe and reliable operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HVAC and associated mechanical building systems within a regulated GMP laboratory and manufacturing environment.
In this role, you will act as a first point of contact for day-to-day HVAC and mechanical facilities issues. You will assess faults and alarms, carry out initial troubleshooting, monitor system performance through the Building Management System (BMS), and determine when specialist contractor or engineering support is required. Particular focus will be placed on temperature, airflow, room pressure, ventilation, cooling demand, and available HVAC capacity in laboratories and operational areas.
Working closely with Facilities, Engineering, Quality, EHS, laboratory users, and external contractors, you will carry out or coordinate preventative and corrective maintenance, inspect mechanical plant, and support troubleshooting and repairs. You will also assist with installations, commissioning, and modifications, maintain accurate technical records, and ensure activities are completed safely and in accordance with site procedures and GMP requirements.
This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through practical technical problem-solving, reliable HVAC performance, timely response to site issues, and improvements that support critical laboratory and manufacturing operations.
REQUIREMENTS
A recognised qualification in HVAC, mechanical engineering technology, building services, refrigeration, facilities maintenance, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant practical experience.
Practical experience working with commercial or industrial HVAC systems, preferably in a GMP, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, food, or other regulated environment.
Strong hands-on troubleshooting and fault-finding skills, with the ability to assess HVAC issues on site, identify likely causes, and determine appropriate next steps or specialist support.
Experience with air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units, ventilation systems, chilled water systems, pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, and associated HVAC controls.
Ability to assess HVAC performance in laboratories and operational areas, including temperature, airflow, room pressure, ventilation, heating and cooling demand, and system capacity.
Experience using a Building Management System (BMS) to monitor equipment performance, review alarms, and investigate unusual operating conditions.
Knowledge of GMP requirements, site safety procedures, and appropriate maintenance documentation and recordkeeping.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, equipment manuals, specifications, and technical documentation.
Experience coordinating with HVAC specialists, contractors, and maintenance service providers, including arranging attendance and supporting troubleshooting and repair activities.
Experience carrying out or coordinating routine preventative and corrective maintenance and inspecting mechanical plant and equipment.
Ability to support equipment installation, maintenance, commissioning, and modification activities under applicable site procedures.
Ability to identify recurring equipment issues and recommend practical improvements to system reliability and performance.
Good organisational, communication, and prioritisation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory users, Facilities, Engineering, Quality, EHS, and contractors.
Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to facilities emergencies as required.
Physical ability to work safely in plant rooms, laboratories, and industrial environments, including manual handling in accordance with site safety requirements.
Commitment to safe working practices, environmental compliance, GMP requirements, and Thermo Fisher Scientific's 4i Values.
Join Thermo Fisher Scientific and be part of a company that values inclusion, collaboration, and personal development. We are an equal opportunity employer and provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Apply today to start your journey with us!
