Duties and Responsibilities of a System Administrator in a Network Operations Centre (NOC)
1. System Monitoring: Monitor servers, operating systems, CPU, memory, disk space, and system availability to ensure smooth operations.
2. Server Management: Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows and Linux servers, virtual machines, and system services.
3. Incident Management: Investigate system alerts, identify technical issues, troubleshoot failures, resolve incidents, and escalate complex problems to the appropriate teams.
4. Performance Monitoring: Monitor system performance, identify potential bottlenecks, and take preventive measures to minimize downtime.
5. User Access Management: Create, modify, and disable user accounts, manage permissions, and maintain access controls using tools such as Active Directory.
6. Security and Updates: Apply security patches, perform system updates, monitor suspicious activities, and follow organizational security policies.
7. Backup and Recovery: Monitor backup jobs, troubleshoot backup failures, restore data when required, and support disaster recovery procedures.
8. Network Troubleshooting: Collaborate with network engineers to investigate connectivity issues between servers, applications, and network devices.
9. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain incident tickets, document troubleshooting procedures, record system changes, and prepare shift handover reports.
10. Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine system health checks, identify recurring issues, and implement solutions to improve system reliability.
11. Automation: Use scripting tools such as PowerShell or Bash to automate repetitive administrative tasks and improve operational efficiency.
12. Team Collaboration: Coordinate with network engineers, security teams, application support teams, and other IT departments to ensure service availability and timely incident resolution.
