About EatClub
At EatClub, we believe restaurants and bars are the beating heart of every city's culture. Whether it's discovering a hidden gem, grabbing a late-night takeaway, or meeting friends for a drink, our mission is simple: help the hospitality industry thrive through smart, powerful tech.
Our platform helps over 4 million customers discover top restaurants and access real-time deals that save them up to 50% off the bill. We empower more than 8,000 venues to fill empty tables, increase foot traffic, and maximise revenue.
#1 app in Food & Drink and awarded Australia's Fastest Growing Tech Company by the AFR in 2025. Now is an exciting time to join our team. Initially co-founded by Marco Pierre White and leaders in the food tech scene, we're now a 200+ person scaleup that's growing fast and making waves in the industry.
Why You'll Love Working With Us
Be part of an innovative company shaping the future of dining
Autonomy, flexibility, high-performing, and a collaborative culture
A passionate team who values creativity, hustle and results
Access to some of the best restaurants and hospitality leaders in the industry
Staff discounts and dining vouchers to enjoy through EatClub
A Day-in-a-Life of our Backend Engineer
As a Backend Engineer at EatClub, you build the systems behind the experience restaurants and diners see every day. You work in Java on serverless AWS, designing APIs and shipping features end-to-end with product, frontend and engineering teammates. It's a hands-on role with plenty of ownership and variety: one week you might be shaping a new feature, the next you're tracking down a performance problem.
On any given week, you will be:
Designing and building scalable backend services in Java
Developing and maintaining serverless APIs, and building and consuming REST and GraphQL APIs
Taking features from idea to production, working alongside product and frontend teammates
Improving the performance, reliability and scalability of our systems
Debugging and resolving technical issues, and fixing the root cause, not just the symptom
Writing automated tests and keeping our code easy to test and change
Reviewing code and sharing what you know with the team
Projects you'll be working on at EatClub...
Building new features that help restaurants fill tables and diners find great deals
Extending our GraphQL and REST APIs as our products grow
Tuning database queries and service performance as usage scales
Improving how we monitor, test and ship our serverless services
Simplifying and modernising parts of our architecture as we learn what works
You have....
3-5 years of commercial experience as a Java developer, with a degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
Strong Java backend skills and a solid grounding in software development principles
Experience building serverless APIs
Experience with REST and GraphQL APIs
Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (MySQL, Postgres, etc.)
Performance tuning and debugging experience
A habit of writing automated tests and testable code
Familiarity with modern architectures and design patterns
Comfort working with Git
Strong written and verbal communication
Full working rights in Australia
It would be extra awesome if you also had...
Experience with AWS (S3, AppSync, API Gateway, Lambda, etc.)
Experience building or working with CI/CD pipelines
An interest in food, restaurants and dining out
You are...
Proactive. You spot what needs doing and get on with it without waiting to be asked
A finisher. You take a feature from first commit to production and check that it works
Product-minded. You care about why you're building something and who it's for, not just how
A collaborator. You work easily with product, frontend and fellow engineers, and explain your thinking clearly
Curious. You enjoy variety, like digging into a tricky bug, and keep learning
If you do a good job...
Restaurants and diners get fast, reliable experiences, and new features land smoothly
Our APIs stay quick and dependable as we grow
Issues are found and fixed quickly, and rarely come back
Teammates ship faster because your code is clean, tested and easy to build on
Maybe this role is not for you if....
You want to work in a single narrow area rather than across the stack with variety
You prefer detailed instructions to owning problems from start to finish
You'd rather not work closely with product and frontend teammates
You prefer slow-moving environments with fixed priorities over a fast-moving one
If you're curious about what we're building, you're welcome to explore EatClub ahead of your interview. First-time users who choose to give it a try can use the code "ECAPPLY5" for an optional $5 voucher to test the experience. This is entirely voluntary and has no impact on your application or interview process.
One last note: even if you feel that you don't meet all the criteria above, we encourage you to apply. Past work experience is not the only indicator of future success, and we are on the look out for hungry talent who wants to grow with us. So if you want to be a part of something remarkable, then we're excited to hear from you.
