About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
In the Software Engineering Excellence (TDD) unit, we are passionate about building great software and empowering digital innovation at scale. Our teams work across software engineering, platform engineering, data services and technical excellence, collaborating with business and technology experts throughout Statkraft. Together, we develop the digital products and platforms that help drive the energy transition while creating lasting value for one of Europe's leading renewable energy companies.
In the STM (Short-Term Modelling) team, we build the software used to plan and optimize Statkraft’s Nordic hydropower production over the next 1–10 days. Sitting between the energy markets, long-term market analysis, hydrology forecasts, and real-time operations, our solutions run 24/7 in Norway and Sweden to help production planners and dispatchers make the best use of the water in our reservoirs.
We deliver both the operative planning application and the underlying Python and C++ libraries for watercourse modelling, optimization algorithms, and running the SHOP optimization engine. Because both our own services and other teams build directly on these libraries, we care about good software engineering fundamentals: clean APIs, clear module boundaries, semantic versioning, and proper release management.
We lean heavily into a traditional Linux environment: we develop on Fedora, distribute our software as native RPM packages, and ship our services as Helm charts deployed via Flux to Kubernetes clusters both on-prem and in the cloud. If you feel at home in the terminal, appreciate how Linux systems are put together, and are comfortable working over SSH, you will fit right in.
What we are looking for:
Strong programmer in Python, with C++ (CMake) a strong plus and TypeScript a plus.
Good at library and API design: clear module boundaries, versioned interfaces and deprecation paths, so others can depend on kort safely.
Package ecosystem and CI: Linux packaging (RPM/dnf), GitLab CI and containers, so modules are easy to build, release and consume.
Uses AI coding agents productively, for example for large mechanical refactorings, while caring about the quality and testability of what gets merged.
Soft skills:
Comfortable with cleanup work: large refactorings done step by step behind tests, deleting code, moving reporting and collectors out of STM without breaking operations.
Thinks in terms of the developers who use STM: examples and docs so teams can use kort without help from our team.
Good social and communication skills
Fluent in English and preferably Norwegian
Pro-active team player who feels responsible and enjoys challenging themselves
Have a drive for excellence
Other useful skills
Kubernetes/Helm is a plus, not a requirement.
