Job Title: Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) – MySQL, PostgreSQL & Oracle
Location: Remote
Work Mode: Fully Remote
Experience: 5+ years
Start Date: Immediate
Job Summary:
Owision is seeking an experienced Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) to own the reliability, performance, scalability, and automation of our MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle database fleet across on-premises and multi-cloud platforms (AWS, OCI, Azure). Operating at the intersection of DBA, SRE, and Platform Engineering, you will treat databases as code, eliminate operational toil, and build self-healing, highly available, and observable data platforms that power mission-critical services.
Key Responsibilities:
Define, monitor, and enforce SLOs, SLIs, and SLAs for database availability, latency, durability, and error budgets across all production tiers.
Architect, maintain, and continuously validate High Availability (HA) configurations, clustering, replication topologies, and automated failover mechanisms.
Lead database incident management, participate in on-call rotations, and conduct blameless Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) to implement permanent preventive engineering solutions.
Design, automate, and regularly test Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity plans to guarantee strict RPO and RTO targets.
Treat databases as code by automating provisioning, scaling, patching, backups, and zero-downtime schema migrations using Python, Bash, Terraform, and Ansible.
Build and maintain internal Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) self-service tools and CI/CD automation pipelines for engineering teams.
Conduct deep query optimization, indexing strategies, capacity planning, and engine-level tuning (InnoDB, PostgreSQL autovacuum, Oracle AWR/ASH).
Build end-to-end monitoring, alerting, and telemetry dashboards using PMM, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch, and Zabbix.
Enforce database security by design, including encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access control, auditing, compliance, and data governance policies.
Required Qualifications:
4–6+ years of hands-on experience as a DBRE, SRE, or Systems DBA managing large-scale, production database environments.
Strong SRE mindset with practical experience managing SLOs/SLIs, error budgets, incident response workflows, and post-mortem practices.
Deep production expertise in MySQL and PostgreSQL internals, alongside solid working knowledge of Oracle Core (RMAN, Data Guard, OEM, RAC basics).
Proven hands-on experience with cloud-native database services across AWS (RDS/Aurora), OCI, or Azure Database.
Strong scripting proficiency in Python and Bash, combined with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) expertise using Terraform and Ansible.
Extensive experience with enterprise backup and recovery tools (Percona XtraBackup, pgBackRest, RMAN) and replication mechanisms (async, semi-sync, logical).
Advanced Linux/Unix systems administration skills, OS-level performance tuning, and deep SQL execution plan diagnosis.
Proven track record of self-directed technical ownership and disciplined incident handling in a fully remote environment.
Preferred Skills:
Experience deploying and orchestrating stateful database workloads using Docker and Kubernetes.
Hands-on experience with Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS R12.x) database administration, patching, cloning, and upgrades.
Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server (Always On Availability Groups) or NoSQL data platforms (MongoDB, Redis).
