About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.
The Saint Louis University Department of Pharmacology & Physiology invites applications for a tenure-track Associate Professor position. This recruitment is part of a strategic faculty recruitment initiative designed to build on the Department’s established strengths and expand critical mass in areas of research excellence. We seek an outstanding, established investigator with a highly productive and well-funded research program whose work will complement and extend the Department’s strengths in mechanistic, translational and therapeutic biomedical research. Areas of particular strength include chronic pain, neurological disorders, and metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders, supported by broad expertise in pharmacology, drug discovery and translational science. These areas are intended to be illustrative rather than restrictive; priority will be given to scientific excellence, research impact, and the potential for strong synergy and collaboration with existing faculty. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative research environment and will benefit from a competitive research startup package, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across Saint Louis University. Faculty may engage with collaborative centers and institutes including the SLU Institute for Translational Neuroscience, SLU Institute for Drug and Biotherapeutic Innovation, SLU Vaccine Center and Liver Center, as well as the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences and Hope Center for Neurological Disorders at Washington University. The St. Louis region also offers a growing biomedical and biotechnology ecosystem, including the Cortex Innovation Community and multiple organizations supporting scientific innovation and commercialization.
Qualifications and Responsibilities
Candidates must hold a PhD, MD/PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree and have an established record of research accomplishment appropriate for appointment at the Associate Professor level. Applicants are expected to have a strong record of peer-reviewed scholarship and current, substantial peer-reviewed extramural research funding, with demonstrated success in securing competitive federal funding such as NIH or equivalent support. The ideal candidate will bring an independent research program that complements and expands the expertise of current Pharmacology & Physiology faculty, creates new opportunities for scientific collaboration, and strengthens the Department’s research and training mission. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a nationally competitive, externally funded research program; contribute to the educational mission of the Department through teaching and mentorship of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical students and undergraduate researchers; participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary research; and engage in appropriate Departmental, School of Medicine and University service.
Saint Louis University School of Medicine is a Catholic, Jesuit institution with a long tradition of excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Established in 1836, the School was the first to award a medical degree west of the Mississippi River. The Department of Pharmacology & Physiology has a strong record of externally funded research and graduate education, including more than 35 years of continuous NIH/NIGMS T32 training support. Department faculty pursue fundamental and translational research across major human health challenges and provide research and educational opportunities for medical, graduate and undergraduate students.
