About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
WANTED: Controller who's survived tax season in the grinder and suspects there's a better way. 100% remote, 45-hour weeks, including days off during tax season.
WARNING: This is not a normal accounting job posting.
If you are looking for a place to clock in, process files, and disappear, this is not your ad. Stop here and apply somewhere else.
If you take ownership without being asked, catch errors before anyone points them out, and genuinely love the craft, keep reading. You may have just found the position your colleagues don't believe exists.
What People Say Who Work Here
Antonella has been with Red Earth for two years. At a recent party, her husband told their friends: "Don't ask Antonella about her job — she loves it too much and won't stop talking about it." She calls Red Earth a unicorn.
Casey interviewed with us last fall. After her second interview she went home and told her father (a CPA with thirty years in the profession and had a front-row seat to Private Equity decimating a fine accounting practice) the terms. No timecards. 100% remote. Vacation during tax season. 45-hour maximum weeks. "Casey, that sounds too good to be true."
It isn't. But it does require the right person.
Most firms treat tax season like a hostage situation. Mandatory weekends in February. Guilt if you leave before 8pm. Partners who haven't taken a vacation since 2009. Red Earth CPA is the polar opposite. 100% virtual, cloud-based. We serve IT service providers, a niche we understand deeply, which means our clients get real expertise instead of a generalist who ChatGPT’s their industry on the way to the meeting.
The right candidate will enjoy a job that 90% of accounting employees envy.
Let's Talk About the Wrong Candidate First
We have terminated team members and rescinded offers. What those looked like:
Nicole arrived with a compelling resume. During onboarding it became clear that a 10-year stretch of "self-employment" on her CV was actually her husband's business, where she had been helping out informally. The gap between what the resume implied and what she could actually do was too wide to bridge. We parted ways early.
The August Rescind. We offered a position to someone who interviewed very well. Then we looked closer at employment history: four jobs in three years, each one ending on terms that didn't quite add up. We pulled the offer.
The 3-Hours-a-Day Candidate. She came highly recommended. What nobody mentioned was that her actual working hours, traceable from her outputs, averaged about three hours of productive work per day. The rest was the appearance of busy.
The person who belongs in this role reads these stories and says: "Yeah, I've worked with a few of those too. I am not that person."
The Position: Controller
Red Earth CPA is hiring a full-time remote Controller. This is a leadership-adjacent role — you are not just executing tasks, you are setting the standard for the work that goes out under this firm's name.
What you will be doing:
• Overseeing and delivering monthly accounting engagements for a portfolio of MSP clients
• Reviewing financial statements, balance sheets, and income statements for accuracy before delivery
• Coding and reviewing payments in Bill.com and managing accounts payable workflows
• Categorizing transactions daily using QBO alongside DEXT
• Processing and reviewing payroll with a high level of accuracy
• Supporting and mentoring junior team members and reviewing their work
• Collaborating with leadership on client strategy, financial reporting, and special projects
• Identifying process gaps and building documentation that makes the team more efficient
• Participating in client-facing meetings and responding to client inquiries with confidence
• Contributing to the firm's knowledge base in Confluence
What this role is not: a place to hide. Every deliverable is visible. Every deadline is real. Every client-facing meeting requires you to know your numbers cold.
What We Require
• Minimum 5 years of accounting experience with clear progression — not lateral movement dressed up as growth
• Accounting degree required
• CPA preferred, or actively pursuing licensure
• QuickBooks Online proficiency required — this is non-negotiable
• Experience with Bill.com, Ramp, Karbon, DEXT, or Fathom is a strong plus
• Experience with a PSA tool preferred: ConnectWise, Halo, or Autotask
• Prior supervisory, lead, or review capacity preferred
• Reliable internet and a dedicated remote workspace
• Available and responsive during Eastern Time business hours
What "5 years of experience" means: we mean five years of doing the work, owning mistakes, learning from them, and building new capacities. We do not mean one year of experience repeated five times.
What We Offer
• $75,000 – $85,000 per year based on experience
• Performance-based bonuses
• Paid time off, even during tax season, because that's the point
• Company 401(k) match
• Health insurance stipend
• Company-provided laptop, second monitor, and the technology you need to do the job well
• A fully remote team that actually communicates
• A team built around autonomy, appreciation, and growth, not surveillance and guilt
How to Apply
Do not send a resume. Write us a letter and send it to office@redearthcpa.com. Tell us in your own words why you fit what we're looking for and how you can serve this position. A resume submitted instead of a letter will disqualify you immediately. We are testing whether you can follow instructions, because that is the first thing this job requires. Do not send us anything AI-generated or you’ll be instantly disqualified. (We can tell.)
