Verasight was founded by and for academic researchers. We are building the future of survey research with unparalleled data quality and a re-imagined survey respondent experience. Our team recognizes the importance of high-quality data for our customers to make key decisions that affect academic research, national policy, the direction of Fortune 500 companies, and the public conversation.
We are looking for a Data Engineer to build the tools and data infrastructure behind our survey research. We are a scrappy team, and you will work directly with our data science team to build Verasight and to expand access to high-quality survey data. This role reports to the VP of Data Science.
We depend on colleagues who are diverse, team-oriented, novel thinkers, and passionate about redefining the survey research landscape. Verasight works to create a welcoming community in which all individuals are respected and included.

About the Role
Our data scientists field surveys, clean and weight data, monitor panel quality, and deliver results to clients. Much of the tooling that makes that work fast and trustworthy includes R packages for reporting, pipelines for survey fielding and recruitment, cost and margin tracking, panel quality monitoring, and AI-assisted tools that turn questionnaires into live surveys.
You will help own and extend that tooling. Your customers are our data scientists. Your job is to understand how they work well enough to build tools that make their work faster, more reliable, and easier to audit. You'll see the whole system end to end and ship right-sized solutions.
Responsibilities
Build and maintain internal tools, packages, and pipelines (largely R and Python) that remove bottlenecks from survey fielding, data cleaning, weighting, reporting, and panel monitoring
Work alongside data scientists on live projects to learn their workflows before automating them, so the tools fit how people actually work
Respond quickly when a data scientist hits a wall; you'll often be the first call
Scope problems well: decide whether a need calls for a script, a package, a scheduled job, a service, or nothing at all
Use AI coding and analysis tools as a real part of your workflow, verify what they produce, and help shape what responsible AI use looks like at Verasight
Partner with Verasight leadership on where our data infrastructure should go, solving today's problems in ways that help us move into the future.
Required Qualifications
2+ years writing code that other people depend on, in Python or R, and willingness to work in the other
Comfort with SQL and relational databases
Working fluency with Git, GitHub, and code review
Some experience with cloud services or managed platforms (we use AWS, Supabase, Railway, and Vercel, among others); we care more that you can learn a platform and less about the specific stack you’re most comfortable with today
Sound security instincts: you keep secrets out of code, think about who can access what, and handle sensitive data carefully
Hands-on experience using AI tools to write or review code, and informed opinions about where they help and where they don't
Excellent written communication, including clear READMEs and short design notes
Willingness to operate independently and desire to constantly innovate
Commitment to working in an inclusive environment
Preferred: experience with survey data or Qualtrics, R package development, CI/CD (GitHub Actions), containers or infrastructure-as-code, scheduled data pipelines, familiarity with survey methodology (weighting, sampling, data quality checks)
We don't require a computer science degree, experience at a large tech company, or years on a specific big-data stack. If this sounds like you and you're unsure about a bullet, apply anyway.
Benefits
Competitive salary based on experience
401(k) with company matching
Health insurance
Gain experience working directly with government agencies, nonprofits, academic researchers, and corporations
Remote work
