Senior PHP Developer

Exchange My Car is a fast-growing UK-based tech platform transforming how people sell their vehicles. We provide a fast, transparent and hassle-free alternative to traditional selling methods.
Due to rapid growth, we are looking for a Senior PHP Developer who will play a key role in modernising our systems, introducing engineering best practices and helping scale our platform for the next stage of growth.
What We’re Looking For:
6+ years of professional PHP development experience
Strong experience with modern PHP (PHP 8+)
Experience working with modern MVC frameworks (e.g. CodeIgniter, Laravel, Symfony)
Good understanding of front-end fundamentals (JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3 and Bootstrap)
Hands-on experience using AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) as part of your day-to-day development workflow
Experience in improving or modernising legacy systems
Solid understanding of OOP and SOLID principles
Understanding of design patterns and clean architecture
Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs
Strong knowledge of Git and collaborative workflows
Experience with Composer and dependency management
Experience implementing automated testing (e.g. PHPUnit)
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and deployment best practices
Experience with performance optimisation and scalability improvements
Project management or technical leadership experience, including planning, prioritising and delivering work to deadlines
Familiarity with Agile development methodologies

About the Role:
As a Senior PHP Developer, you will:
Lead improvements to our PHP architecture and codebase
Introduce modern engineering best practices, including the effective use of AI coding tools
Develop, improve and modernise PHP applications (including legacy CodeIgniter components where applicable)
Plan and manage technical projects from scoping through to delivery
Collaborate with cross-functional and non-technical teams to design, develop and implement new features
Write clean, efficient and well-documented code
Troubleshoot and debug complex issues to ensure optimal performance
Stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices in web development
Contribute to architectural decisions and technical roadmap planning
Mentor other developers and raise engineering standards across the team
