About Trener
Trener is building the software foundation for a new generation of industrial robotics. We combine advanced AI, intuitive programming, and pre-trained skill models to make robots easier to deploy, operate, and adapt to real-world industrial work. With teams in San Jose and Trondheim, we build software that connects cloud infrastructure, developer platforms, and deployed robotic systems.
About the Role
Our robots are controlled by industrial edge computers at customer sites. You will own the platform layer of those computers: the Linux operating system, how devices are provisioned and updated, and how our software talks to the hardware underneath. Everything that runs on the device builds on your work. You will work closely with our robotics, AI, and cloud engineers, share your low-level expertise across teams, and help bring our software to new edge hardware as our platform grows.
This is a senior individual contributor role reporting to the Chief Product Officer. You will work closely with our robot software engineers, who build the applications running on the device, and with our cloud engineers, who run the services the devices connect to.
What You Will Own
- Edge operating system: the Linux root filesystem on our edge controllers: base image, kernel configuration, system services, and hardening.
- Provisioning: the tooling and process that turn a bare device into a configured controller ready for a customer site.
- Real-time and kernel: kernel configuration and real-time tuning for the robot control path.
- Hardware interfaces: integrating cameras, grippers, and industrial networks at the OS and driver level.
- Device lifecycle: software updates with rollback, recovery of devices in the field, device enrollment, and secure boot.
Requirements
- Software engineering. You write maintainable, tested code in a systems language (C++, Go, or Rust), and you review others' code.
- Linux below the application layer. You have built and maintained embedded Linux images for devices in the field (Debian/Ubuntu, Yocto, or Buildroot).
- Debugging down the stack. Boot, kernel, drivers, networking, and performance problems, on x86 or ARM.
- Bash or Python for tooling and automation.
- Clear written communication in English. Technical decisions here are discussed, documented and reviewed in writing, often across time zones.
Experience That Will Help You Succeed
- Configuring and building kernels, device trees, and drivers.
- Real-time Linux: PREEMPT_RT, CPU isolation, and latency measurement.
- NVIDIA Jetson and L4T.
- Over-the-air update frameworks such as Mender, RAUC, SWUpdate, or OSTree, and A/B update schemes.
- Secure boot, TPM, and disk encryption on edge devices.
- Industrial networks such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, or EtherNet/IP.
- Robotics software, ROS 2, or containerized applications on edge devices.
What We Offer
The opportunity to own the Linux foundation of robots running in real factories. A senior technical role with direct influence over our edge platform, reporting to the Chief Product Officer.
A growing international engineering organization with offices in the United States and Norway.
