Position Summary
The Autodesk Inventor Designer creates, modifies, tests, and maintains part models, assemblies, and drawing templates for PRT’s custom engineering design automation system. This position develops reusable parametric templates that generate accurate 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings across multiple configurations, dimensions, and engineering requirements.
Working with Engineering and the automation development team, the Designer supports a long-term industrial storage tank project that combines engineering calculations, standardized requirements, Inventor models, and automated drawing generation. Engineering supplies design criteria and calculations; this role focuses on Inventor modeling and detailing. Strong Inventor skills are essential. Programming experience is beneficial but not required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and maintain Autodesk Inventor part, assembly, and drawing templates used by the automated design system
Create parametric models that accommodate varying dimensions and configurations while preserving design relationships.
Build and maintain assemblies with properly defined constraints; apply, modify, and troubleshoot assembly relationships.
reate complete fabrication drawing templates with base, projected, section, and detail views; configure dimensions, centerlines, weld symbols, balloons, annotations, and parts lists.
Modify existing models and templates to support additional configurations and engineering requirements.
Engineering supplies design criteria and calculations; this role focuses on Inventor modeling and detailing.
Strong Inventor skills are essential. Programming experience is beneficial but not required.
Test models and drawings across parameter and configuration changes to verify that geometry, views, dimensions, references, and parts lists update correctly.
Troubleshoot modeling, assembly, and drawing issues; identify inconsistencies and coordinate resolution with Engineering.
Work closely with the automation development team to ensure templates are compatible with automated design processes.
Help establish and maintain consistent Inventor modeling and detailing standards.
Organize and maintain CAD files, revisions, templates, and design references as the system evolves.
Communicate progress, technical questions, and schedule concerns; incorporate approved feedback and protect confidential project information.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Professional Autodesk Inventor experience is required. Experience exclusively with SolidWorks, Revit, or other CAD software does not satisfy this requirement.
Strong proficiency creating and modifying Inventor part models and assemblies, including applying and troubleshooting assembly constraints.
Ability to create complete Inventor fabrication drawings with base, projected, section, and detail views.
Proficiency with dimensions, centerlines, weld symbols, balloons, annotations, and parts lists.
Ability to understand and modify existing models and assemblies while preserving their design relationships.
Understanding of parametric modeling principles and how dimensional changes affect parts and assemblies.
Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to interpret engineering and fabrication drawings.
Ability to work independently, troubleshoot complex Inventor issues, collaborate with technical staff, and maintain organized, accurate work.
Attention to detail, clear communication, dependable attendance, and ability to manage changing priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
The following skills are beneficial but are not required:
Inventor user parameters, equations, and linked parameters; configurable assemblies using Model States.
Inventor iLogic and design automation; Autodesk Inventor API, VB.NET, or C#.
Sheet metal, structural steel, and welded assemblies.
Inventor BOM structures, iProperties, and drawing references.
Standardized CAD templates and reusable parametric models.
Autodesk Vault or other CAD data management systems.
Aboveground storage tank design, construction, or fabrication.
Education and Experience
Demonstrated professional Autodesk Inventor proficiency and relevant hands-on modeling and detailing experience are the primary qualifications. Relevant drafting, CAD, mechanical design, or technical education supports this work. No specific degree, professional engineering license, or minimum number of years is established for this position. Specialized tank industry experience is helpful but not necessary.
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate builds organized, adaptable models that are easy to modify; works confidently with complex assemblies; identifies modeling problems; and produces drawings that remain accurate as designs change. The position’s highest priority is proficiency in Inventor modeling and detailing.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office using a computer and CAD software for extended periods. Duties require reviewing detailed drawings, entering and manipulating data, communicating with coworkers, and moving within the office. Any visits to fabrication areas require compliance with posted safety rules and required personal protective equipment. Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation; requests should be directed to Human Resources.
