About Grover
Founded in 2015, Grover enables consumers and businesses across Europe to subscribe to tech devices and comprehensive technology solutions - from individual smartphones, laptops, and wearables to full corporate device setups. The company offers access to over 1,000 unique tech items on flexible and financially convenient terms. A pioneer of the circular economy, Grover refurbishes and recirculates devices to help eliminate e-waste.
To continue this incredible adventure, we are currently looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Risk) to join our talented Risk Engineering team at our Berlin HQ (40 hours full-time, onsite 3 days per week (Tues-Thurs).
Risk Engineering builds the systems that decide which subscription orders Grover approves, declines, reviews or verifies, in real time, across four markets and for both consumers and businesses. As a Senior Software Engineer, you report to the Engineering Manager, Risk Engineering, and join a small, senior team that owns its services end to end. You work closely with risk analysts, data scientists, and product to grow approval rate while keeping fraud and defaults in check.
🎯 What you will contribute:
Our risk decisioning platform: the rule engine, experiments and decision APIs (FastAPI, GraphQL federation) that every Grover order passes through.
New risk products, starting with dynamic pricing and counter offers, from design to production.
Integrations with credit bureaus and identity, fraud and AML providers, built to stay reliable when vendors are not.
Event-driven flows on Kafka for decisions, manual review, ID verification and bank-account checks, correct under retries, duplicates and race conditions.
Tools for our risk analysts: the manual review experience and our LLM-powered risk assistant on AWS Bedrock.
Reliability and observability of your services: Datadog monitors, on-call, runbooks and removing legacy dependencies.
🤝 What you bring:
Backend expertise & flexibility: 5+ years of backend engineering, with Python in production as your main language, and you are comfortable working 90% on the backend and 10% on the frontend.
Product thinking & mindset: You don't just write code; you care about the "why", keeping the end-user and business impact in mind.
Ownership rigour: You have owned services in production and manage the full lifecycle, from cross-service debugging to monitoring. You are comfortable participating in an on-call rotation.
Champion of testing: You treat testing as a core part of development, not an afterthought. You are comfortable writing your own unit and end-to-end tests and own the quality of what you ship since we don't have a dedicated QA team.
Event-driven architectures & databases: Hands-on experience with event-driven systems (Kafka or similar) and PostgreSQL.
API design & integrations: Experience designing REST and/or GraphQL APIs and integrating third-party APIs.
Cloud & infrastructure: You are comfortable with AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes, and can work with Terraform.
Cross-functional collaboration: You like working with non-engineers, can explain technical trade-offs simply, and stay calm when priorities shift.
Bonus points: Fintech, payments, lending, fraud or credit-risk experience; rule engines or ML in production; LLM tooling; Rust, Rails or Vue; German.
🚀 The Grover Way - How We Drive Success:
Own It: We take ownership seriously and define what success looks like. We drive shared ownership and don't wait - we drive. We keep one another accountable and take responsibility when issues arise.
Challenge, Decide, and Commit: We engage in proactive support, active listening, and healthy conflict to reach the best outcomes. We value diverse perspectives and, once a decision is made, we commit to it fully.
Empower and Grow: We enable, trust, and coach one another toward high performance, always thinking and acting like owners. We seek growth, apply feedback, and support the development of our peers.
Respect, Transparency, and Clarity: We strive for clear, respectful, and open communication with no surprises. We simplify complex information so everyone knows the "what, why, and how".
