About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Job Description SummaryThe Principal Engineer, Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) sets the technology vision and direction for POCUS transducer array and image-processing technology within GE HealthCare's POCUS business. This role requires deep, applied expertise in physics and array signal processing — drawing on ultrasound, sonar, or related array-sensing domains — combined with a strategic understanding of clinical and customer needs, GE HealthCare's IP portfolio, and the competitive technology landscape. Engineering leadership relies on this Principal Engineer to drive breakthrough innovation, differentiate GE HealthCare's POCUS platforms, and grow engineering talent through active mentorship and hands-on team collaboration.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
Set and drive the technology vision, multi-generational roadmap, and product-specific development plans for POCUS transducer array and image-processing technology.
Apply deep physics expertise (acoustic wave propagation, transducer materials, beamforming) and array-processing techniques drawn from ultrasound, sonar, or radar domains to solve complex imaging and sensing challenges.
Architect and evaluate system-level trade-offs spanning transducer hardware, front-end electronics, and image reconstruction/signal-processing pipelines.
Influence global product roadmaps and segment leadership through action-oriented, technically differentiated recommendations grounded in market, competitive, and technology insight.
Serve as the technical readiness focal point for engineering teams, cross-functional partners, and customers on POCUS-related technology questions.
Coach and mentor engineers and scientists, building technical depth, career growth, and a collaborative engineering culture; operate as an engaged, visible member of the team — not solely an individual contributor.
Champion a culture of innovation: generate, evaluate, and de-risk novel concepts; support IP creation (patents) and translate research into differentiated, manufacturable products.
Track and represent GE HealthCare's position relative to competitive and academic advances in ultrasound, sonar, and array-processing technology.
Partner with R&D, clinical, regulatory, and quality functions to ensure new designs meet safety, regulatory, and quality requirements across the entire NPI cycle.
Basic Qualifications
Master's Degree (minimum) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Acoustics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related technical/scientific discipline; PhD strongly preferred.
Strong theoretical and applied knowledge of physics as it relates to acoustic wave propagation, transducer behavior, and array signal-processing theory.
Proven, hands-on experience in one or more of the following: medical ultrasound imaging systems, sonar/underwater acoustic array systems, or radar/phased-array sensing technologies.
10+ years of progressive engineering or scientific experience in a relevant technical domain, including system-level design and delivery of complex sensing or imaging products.
Demonstrated track record of technical innovation — patents, publications, or shipped breakthrough products — in ultrasound, sonar, or related array-processing technology.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for engineering, clinical, and business audiences.
Demonstrated passion and ability for coaching and mentoring engineers, and a genuine track record as a collaborative, visible member of the engineering team.
Desired Characteristics
PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Acoustics, or a related field.
Direct design experience with ultrasound transducer arrays, beamforming algorithms, adaptive/synthetic-aperture processing, or comparable sonar/radar array systems.
Working knowledge of AI/ML techniques applied to ultrasound or array-sensing data — e.g., deep-learning-based image reconstruction/enhancement, AI-assisted image analysis or auto-diagnostics, or automated probe/beam guidance — and how these integrate with classical signal-processing pipelines.
Track record of driving multi-generational technology roadmaps and influencing strategic segment direction.
Strong innovation mindset — comfortable exploring novel, higher-risk approaches while balancing feasibility, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.
Experience working within regulated medical device environments (FDA, IEC 60601, ISO 13485) is a plus.
Recognized internally or externally as a technical mentor and “go-to” subject-matter expert; experience building and growing engineering talent.
Self-starter, energizing, results-oriented, and comfortable operating across both strategic planning and hands-on technical work.
Experience with global product development and cross-site, cross-functional collaboration.
