Who We Are:
Africa Specialty Risks (ASR) is enabling sustainable economic development by fulfilling unmet insurance needs. Our platform provides local underwriting expertise, an unparalleled distribution network and access to global capacity.
Founded in the heart of Africa and with offices across the continent and the Middle East, we provide regional market knowledge, data insights, and technical proficiency for capital partners who are looking to increase their presence in growth markets.
We also participate on each and every risk we underwrite with balance sheets in Bermuda, Mauritius and through Syndicate 2454 at Lloyd’s. ASR is committed to accelerating business growth by providing customised service and innovative insurance products to enable development.
Role Purpose:
The Carrier Operations Manager will provide the day-to-day coordination, oversight and operational control needed to ensure ASR meets its carrier and capacity-provider reporting commitments accurately, consistently and on time.
Reporting to the Head of Underwriting Operations, the role will maintain a single operational view of reporting obligations, deadlines, hand-offs, queries, exceptions and service risks across Underwriting Operations, Delegated Underwriting Administration, Finance Operations, Claims, Data and Technology.
This is a hands-on management and coordination role. It will not replace the specialist teams that own bordereaux production, delegated authority governance, finance processing, or commercial carrier relationships.
The role will ensure those activities connect through clear processes, controls, management information, and escalation, while building a resilient Mauritius-based support capability for ASR’s growing carrier operations requirements.
Role Responsibilities:
Carrier Reporting Coordination & Service Oversight
Maintain the central carrier reporting calendar, requirements register and operational tracker covering submission dates, report types, responsible owners, dependencies, evidence, and escalation routes.
Coordinate the end-to-end delivery of carrier reporting packs, confirming that each contributing team has completed its own activities and that submissions are issued through the agreed route within required timescales.
Monitor acknowledgements, rejected or queried submissions, late items, recurring exceptions, and unresolved carrier operational queries, ensuring each issue has a clear owner and action plan.
Provide a single operational point of coordination for carrier reporting matters, while routing technical, financial, claims, delegated authority, and commercial decisions to the accountable function.
Bordereaux Coordination & Controlled Hand-offs
Coordinate the timetable and controlled hand-offs across written/risk, exposure, claims, and settlement bordereaux without inheriting their specialist production.
Work with the DUA Bordereaux Manager and DUA team, who retain responsibility for production, validation and delivery of written/risk and exposure bordereaux.
Work with Finance Operations, who retain responsibility for producing claims and settlement bordereaux, associated reconciliations, payment processing, and financial approvals.
Maintain submission evidence, carrier acknowledgements, exception records, and a complete operational audit trail showing what was due, supplied, accepted, or returned.
Identify cross-functional breaks, missing inputs and recurring data issues, coordinate resolution with the accountable owner, and escalate material or repeated failures to the Head of Underwriting Operations.
Process Management, Controls & Management Information
Document and maintain end-to-end Carrier Operations processes, procedures, RACI arrangements, service standards, control points, and escalation routes.
Monitor operational performance through practical measures such as on-time delivery, first-time acceptance, open queries, ageing, recurring exceptions, and overdue remediation.
Prepare concise Carrier Operations management information for the Head of Underwriting Operations and relevant governance forums, showing performance, trends, risks, root causes, owners, and actions.
Support audit, assurance, and regulatory reviews by coordinating complete and accessible process, control, and submission evidence.
Promote early escalation, root-cause resolution, and sustainable remediation rather than repeated manual correction.
Mauritius Team Coordination & Operational Support
Build and coordinate the Mauritius-based Carrier Operations support capability under the direction of the Head of Underwriting Operations, with clear priorities, service standards, and development plans.
Provide day-to-day local coordination, coaching, and workload oversight for assigned support resources, while functional ownership of DUA activities remains with the Head of DUA and relevant DUA managers.
Coordinate effectively across Mauritius, London, and other ASR offices, creating clear hand-offs and maintaining service continuity during reporting peaks, absences, and month- or quarter-end cycles.
Create and maintain practical procedures, checklists, templates, and knowledge materials that reduce key-person dependency and support consistent execution.
Lloyd’s, London Market & Operational Readiness Support
Support Lloyd’s and London Market operational processes by coordinating reporting readiness, evidence, deadlines, dependencies, and operational follow-up with the accountable subject-matter experts.
Support the operational readiness of new or amended carrier arrangements by confirming that reporting requirements, formats, timetables, owners, controls, and hand-offs are understood before go-live.
Escalate where agreed carrier obligations cannot be operationalised reliably, while leaving commercial negotiation and formal carrier relationship ownership with the relevant business or DUA lead.
Support ASR’s Lloyd’s Managing Agency and wider operating-model initiatives where Carrier Operations processes, controls, evidence, or transition planning are required.
Transformation & Continuous Improvement
Support the design and delivery of improvements to carrier reporting, workflow, data quality, exception management, and operational management information.
Work with DUA, Finance Operations, Claims, Data and Technology to identify repetitive manual activity, clarify business requirements, coordinate testing, and support adoption of agreed solutions.
Ensure process changes preserve clear ownership, segregation of duties and appropriate controls, and do not create duplicate activity or new key-person dependencies.
Track delivery of agreed improvements and confirm that benefits, control enhancements, and revised procedures are embedded into business-as-usual operations.
Any other reasonable tasks as directed by the Head of Underwriting Operations.
