Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced, customer-facing Customer Engineer with expert-level (L400) skills across all versions of Exchange Server, Exchange Hybrid and Microsoft 365.
The candidate will design, deploy, migrate, optimize and troubleshoot complex messaging environments for enterprise and government customers, from legacy Exchange through to Exchange Online, and act as a trusted technical advisor to technical, non-technical and leadership stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead architecture, design, deployment and optimization of on-premises, hybrid and Exchange Online environments.
• Plan and execute upgrades and migrations across Exchange versions (2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and Exchange Server Subscription Edition) and to Exchange Online.
• Configure and operate Exchange Hybrid, including the Hybrid Configuration Wizard, Modern/Classic Hybrid, free/busy, mail flow and coexistence.
• Design high availability and disaster recovery using DAGs, load balancing,
namespaces and certificates.
• Resolve complex, critical-severity issues with root-cause analysis and clear
remediation plans.
• Deliver health checks, risk assessments, workshops and knowledge transfer to
customer teams.
• Secure messaging environments and advise on compliance, retention and Microsoft 365 governance.
• Automate administration and reporting with PowerShell and Microsoft Graph.
• Produce design documents, runbooks, migration plans and executive summaries.
Required Technical Skills (L400)
Exchange Server (all versions)
• Deep knowledge of Exchange Server 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and Subscription
Edition architecture, roles and services.
• Installation, cumulative/security updates, upgrades, side-by-side migrations and decommissioning (including removing the last Exchange server where supported).
• Database Availability Groups, transport (Edge/Mailbox), client access, namespace planning and certificate management.
• Performance tuning, capacity planning and advanced troubleshooting with logs, message tracking and diagnostic tools.
Exchange Hybrid
• Hybrid Configuration Wizard, Modern Hybrid Agent and Classic Hybrid
deployments.
• Mailbox moves (remote move migrations), migration batches and endpoints;
cutover, staged and IMAP migrations.
• Hybrid mail flow, connectors, centralized mail transport, OAuth, free/busy and organization relationships.
• Identity synchronization with Microsoft Entra Connect / Cloud Sync and Active Directory.
Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online
• Exchange Online administration: mailboxes, shared/resource mailboxes,
permissions, policies, mail flow rules and connectors.
• Email security: Exchange Online Protection, Microsoft Defender for Office 365, SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
• Microsoft Purview: retention, litigation hold, eDiscovery, data loss prevention and auditing.
• Microsoft Entra ID: Conditional Access, MFA and modern authentication.
• Microsoft 365 tenant administration, service health, usage reporting and adoption.
• Cross-tenant mailbox migrations and tenant-to-tenant scenarios.

Experience and Qualifications
• 15+ years in customer-facing roles across systems architecture, administration, operations, IT consulting, and on-premises and cloud support for enterprise and/or government customers.
• Proven track record delivering large Exchange migrations and hybrid deployments end to end.
• BA/BS (or higher) in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent
experience.
• Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
Optional Skills
• Microsoft Graph API and Exchange Online PowerShell automation.
• Microsoft Teams and SharePoint Online integration with Exchange.
• Well-Architected Framework and Cloud Adoption Framework concepts.
Relevant Certifications
• Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate, Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert, or Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert (MS-102) are a plus
