Role Overview
The Tax Consultant at Lumber is responsible for owning all customer-facing tax matters related to payroll, from routine payroll tax calculations and filings to complex year-end tax processes. This role serves as a subject matter expert for payroll taxes, works closely with customers and internal teams, and ensures accurate, timely, and compliant tax outcomes across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
You will be a critical part of Lumber’s customer trust layer, helping customers navigate tax complexity while informing product, implementation, and support teams with real-world tax expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Tax Operations
Oversee payroll tax calculations, withholdings, and filings for customers across federal, state, and local jurisdictions
Support customers during payroll runs by resolving tax-related issues, discrepancies, and notices
Ensure accurate setup and maintenance of tax profiles, including multi-state and local tax configurations
Year-End Tax Management
Own year-end payroll tax processes including W-2s, W-3s, 1099s (where applicable), and related filings
Coordinate corrections, amendments, and reissues as needed
Support customers through audits, tax agency inquiries, and reconciliations
Customer Advisory & Support
Act as a trusted advisor to customers on payroll tax compliance and best practices
Explain complex tax concepts in a clear, practical manner to payroll administrators and finance teams
Partner with Customer Success and Support teams to resolve escalations and high-impact tax issues
Compliance & Risk Management
Monitor changes in payroll tax regulations and assess impact on customers and the Lumber platform
Help define internal controls and processes to reduce tax risk and errors
Collaborate with external tax agencies and third-party vendors when required
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with Product and Engineering teams to improve tax-related workflows, automation, and reporting
Provide feedback on edge cases, compliance gaps, and opportunities to enhance the tax engine
Support Implementation teams during onboarding of complex customers
Qualifications
Required
5+ years of experience in payroll tax, payroll compliance, or tax consulting
Deep knowledge of U.S. payroll taxes (federal, state, and local)
Hands-on experience with year-end payroll tax filings and reconciliations
Experience supporting multi-state payroll and complex tax scenarios
Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with customers
Preferred
Experience in construction payroll, including union, prevailing wage, or job-costed environments
Background working with payroll software providers, PEOs, or tax filing services
Familiarity with tax notices, audits, and agency correspondence
CPP, CPA, or similar certification
