About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
We're seeking a front-end lead to establish and drive front-end engineering excellence at Advanced Infrastructure. Reporting directly to the CTO, you'll lead our front-end team through a critical architectural transformation, migrating from a monolithic deployment to a micro-frontend architecture while building a culture of engineering best practices and scalable development processes.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both architectural vision and deep technical expertise in modern React ecosystems, geospatial visualisation, and scalable front-end infrastructure.
The core responsibilities for the job include the following:
Technical Leadership and Architecture:
Lead the architectural transformation from monolithic to micro-frontend deployment, evaluating and implementing approaches such as module federation, single-spa, or other micro-frontend patterns.
Drive componentisation initiatives and establish a comprehensive design system that enables modularity and reusability across the platform.
Architect and optimise real-time geospatial data visualisation solutions using Deck.gl and Tegola, ensuring high performance for large-scale dataset rendering
Design and implement complex workflow systems for scenario modelling and computational analysis within the browser
Collaborate directly with the CTO, system architect, and staff engineers on system architecture decisions and technical strategy.
Take complete ownership of the existing TypeScript/React codebase, understanding current architecture, identifying technical debt, and planning strategic refactoring efforts.
Engineering Standards and Quality:
Establish and enforce industry-standard practices for component design patterns and modularity, TypeScript best practices and type safety, and code organisation and architectural patterns.
Performance optimisation for data-intensive applications.
Responsive and accessible UI development.
Implement comprehensive observability and monitoring solutions: Front-end error tracking and crash reporting, performance monitoring (bundle size, render performance, and runtime metrics), user interaction analytics, and real-time dashboard health monitoring.
Set up robust code review processes, testing strategies, and CI/CD pipelines.
Build alerting systems to identify and address production issues proactively.
Team Management and Culture:
Manage and mentor the front-end / full-stack engineering team, fostering technical growth and engineering excellence.
Establish a collaborative engineering culture focused on: Knowledge sharing and documentation, continuous improvement and learning, code quality and craftsmanship, and cross-functional collaboration.
Lead technical planning sessions and R& D initiatives for new components, libraries, and architectural improvements.
Partner with the CTO to scale front-end engineering practices, processes, and team structure.
Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development discussions.
Delivery and Innovation:
Lead refactoring efforts to improve codebase maintainability, performance, and developer experience.
Evaluate and integrate new technologies and approaches that enhance dashboard efficacy and user experience.
Drive initiatives to improve front-end build processes, deployment pipelines, and development workflows.
Balance technical debt reduction with feature delivery and business priorities.
The core requirements for the job include the following:
Technical Expertise:
4+ years of front-end engineering experience with at least 2 years leading engineering teams.
Expert-level knowledge of React (latest versions) and TypeScript.
Strong experience with state management libraries (Zustand, Redux).
Proven track record of leading architectural migrations, particularly from monolithic to modular/microservice architectures.
Experience building and maintaining component libraries and design systems.
Deep understanding of performance optimisation techniques for data-intensive, real-time applications.
Strong knowledge of modern build tools and bundlers (Webpack, Vite, esbuild, Rollup).
Experience establishing observability, monitoring, and error tracking for production front-end applications.
Geospatial and Visualisation:
Experience with geospatial visualisation libraries (DeckGL strongly preferred or Mapbox and Leaflet).
Understanding of geospatial data formats and tile servers (experience with Tegola is a plus).
Experience building data visualisation dashboards with real-time data updates.
Familiarity with WebGL and GPU-accelerated rendering for large datasets.
Leadership and Process:
Demonstrated ability to establish engineering standards and best practices from the ground up.
Experience setting up code review processes, testing frameworks, and quality gates.
Strong technical communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, product, and business stakeholders.
Track record of mentoring engineers and building high-performing teams.
Ability to balance technical excellence with pragmatic delivery.
