Job Summary:
This product focused, developing leadership position tailors electronic and electrical systems for Cummins products. People in these positions will translate product requirements into hardware and software technical requirements that control the operation of Cummins’ products in a variety of customer applications. Additionally, there is responsibility to configure (tune), and complete comprehensive validation testing of the fully integrated hardware and software systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Investigates electronic application and systems problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members. Creates, manages, improves, and applies electronic application and systems development processes and tools. Processes include system specification, modeling and simulation, calibration, Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R), and troubleshooting. Application of tools for simulation, calibration, and product life maintenance required. Obtains input from customers, technical and product teams, manufacturing engineers, supplier partners, and other stakeholders to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions. Makes decisions in the areas of electronic and electrical system design, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of calibrated subsystems and feature classes of electronic subsystems. Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers’ work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design. Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of electronic and electrical systems designs, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of calibrated builds and management of cross-BU integration and coordination. Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge. Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers’ work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design. Responsible for coaching and developing the next generation of technical experts. Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact. Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units. Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams. Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect). Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members. May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.
The Research & Technology (R&T) organization is seeking candidates to advance the state of the art in conventional and electrified powertrain controls for the commercial vehicle industry. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for the development of next-generation powertrain and electrification control systems and help define the technologies, architectures, methodologies, and development practices that enable future products.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the Controls Project Lead for one or more R&T powertrain and electrification projects, including development and coordination of project plans, technical activities, resources, deliverables, and technology handoff.
Define the technical direction and control system architecture for conventional and electrified powertrain controls across multiple R&T projects.
Lead control system concept development, architecture definition, algorithm development, simulation, integration, validation, and demonstration.
Develop strategic technology roadmaps for conventional and electrified powertrain controls that advance the state of the art and align with evolving business and product needs.
Define advanced control methodologies, development processes, and best practices for powertrain and electrification controls.
Lead technical studies including control entitlement studies, detailed model development and validation, and performance, fuel economy, and emissions evaluations.
Lead and support simulation-based controls development and validation, including Model-in-the-Loop (MIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL).
Champion continuous improvement in controls development processes, methods, simulation environments, and engineering tools.
Coach and mentor controls engineers and contribute to the development of technical capability across the organization.
Build and maintain strong technical networks across R&T, business units, product organizations, and the broader controls community to enable collaboration and technology transfer.
Qualifications and Technical Expertise
Successful candidates will have a high level of expertise in advanced control methodologies and simulation-based controls development, along with demonstrated ability to apply these capabilities to complex powertrain systems.
The candidate is expected to have:
Expert-level knowledge of Systems Engineering and its application to control system, feature, and architecture development.
Deep expertise in Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) methodologies and architectures, with the ability to apply these concepts to next-generation control system architecture decisions.
Strong knowledge of CSAR controls software architecture and compositions, including their relationship to features and applications.
Deep knowledge of conventional and electrified powertrain systems, controls, and digital features.
Excellent modeling, simulation, and controls development skills; experience with MATLAB and Simulink is strongly preferred.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a systematic approach to developing solutions for complex and ambiguous technical problems.
Good understanding of powertrain component and system integration, testing, calibration, and debugging across MIL, HIL, test cell, and vehicle environments.
