About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Electrical Engineer – Primary Systems
Substation Primary Design & Delivery | Utilities Domain
As Electrical Engineer – Primary Systems, you will be responsible for the design, technical assurance and delivery support of primary plant across the Utilities Domain — including power transformers, switchgear, busbars, cabling and earthing systems within zone substations and distribution infrastructure. You will work within a multidisciplinary project environment alongside secondary systems, civil/structural, planning and delivery teams to ensure primary designs are safe, compliant, constructible and cost-effective.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and review primary system designs for new and augmented zone substations, switching stations and distribution feeders, including single line diagrams, equipment layouts and general arrangement drawings.
Undertake primary plant sizing, rating and selection (transformers, switchgear, busbars, cables) in accordance with Client standards and Australian Standards.
Perform earthing, fault level, voltage drop and equipment clearance studies to support primary design outputs.
Coordinate primary design interfaces with secondary systems, civil/structural and mains design disciplines to ensure a fully integrated substation solution.
Support outage planning, testing, commissioning, energisation and handover activities for primary plant.
Identify and manage technical risks relating to equipment integration, earthing and network performance.
Provide technical input into procurement, cost estimating and tender evaluation for primary equipment packages.
Conduct design verification, site inspections and non-conformance resolution to maintain quality and compliance.
Contribute to continuous improvement of primary design standards and lessons-learned processes.
About You
You are a motivated electrical engineer with a strong grounding in high-voltage primary plant and a genuine interest in solving complex, real-world network design challenges.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent.
Willingness to travel to project sites.
Strong Communication skills-English
Skills & Experience
4 to 10 years of experience in primary/substation electrical design within the energy, utilities or infrastructure sectors. Strong working knowledge of HV/LV switchgear, power transformers, busbar systems and earthing design. Familiarity with Australian Standards and NSW distribution network design practices ( Utilities Client or comparable DNSP). Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or 3D design tools (Revit, Navisworks) for substation layout and general arrangement work.
Electrical Engineer – Secondary Systems
Protection, Control, SCADA & Automation | Utilities Client , NSW
Utilites Client Secondary Systems asset base — protection, control, SCADA, communications and automation equipment across the network — carries a replacement value of approximately $200 million and is central to safe, reliable network operation, including digitised substations such as South Erskine Park zone substation.
As Electrical Engineer – Secondary Systems, you will design, review and support the delivery of protection, control and automation systems, working closely with primary design, network planning and asset management teams to ensure secondary systems meet performance, safety and regulatory requirements across new works, augmentations and asset renewal.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop secondary systems for substations, including protection schemes, control and SCADA architecture, and detailed electrical schematics. Prepare protection relay settings, coordination studies and testing/commissioning documentation for new and modified network assets. Support the strategic asset management of secondary systems, including condition assessment, renewal planning and lifecycle optimisation of the installed asset base. Coordinate secondary design interfaces with primary and civil/structural disciplines to ensure a fully integrated, constructible substation solution. Contribute to digital substation and IEC 61850-based automation initiatives, supporting the transition to modern, fibre-based control architectures. Coordinate outage planning, testing, commissioning, energisation and handover activities for protection and control systems. Identify and manage technical risks relating to protection systems, earthing, equipment integration and network performance. Provide technical input into procurement, cost estimating and tender evaluation for secondary systems packages. Support continuous improvement, lessons-learned and engineering best-practice initiatives across secondary systems delivery.
About You
You are an experienced electrical engineer with a passion for protection, control and automation systems, and enjoy working collaboratively across disciplines to deliver safe and reliable network outcomes.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent.
Willingness to travel to project sites.
