Advanced Machine Safety Expertise: At least 3+ years of hands‑on experience leading machine safeguarding programs, including risk assessments, safety‑system evaluation, and implementation of Safety Functions (SRP‑CS) per ISO 13849‑1 using tools like SISTEMA.
Functional Safety Certification: Certification as a Functional Safety Engineer (CSME or TÜV) to validate expertise in machinery functional safety requirements.
Strong Controls & Automation Knowledge: Deep technical understanding of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation control systems, including the ability to read and interpret complex schematics.
Standards & Regulatory Mastery: Working knowledge of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and detailed application of key standards such as ISO 13849‑1/2, IEC 62061, ISO 12100, and relevant ANSI/ISO regulations.
Safety Hardware & System Proficiency: Familiarity with a wide range of safeguarding technologies — interlocks, presence‑sensing devices, safety relays, safety PLCs, safety‑rated drives/servos, and pneumatic/hydraulic safety valves.
Testing, Validation & Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to use electrical/mechanical test equipment, commission and troubleshoot safety functions, and program logic solvers, safety relays, and HMIs.
Leadership in Cross‑Functional Safety Work: Experience leading multidisciplinary risk assessments, guiding teams with limited safety knowledge, managing consultants, and driving company‑wide machine‑safety improvement plans.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
Deep Machine Safety Expertise: You need strong knowledge of global, national, and local machine‑safety regulations to interpret requirements and guide plants, projects, and leadership effectively.
Risk Assessment & Technical Evaluation Skills: You must be able to perform machine safety risk assessments, inspections, verifications, validations, and system design reviews — including safeguarding and functional safety evaluations.
Controls & Systems Knowledge: Success requires hands‑on understanding of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation control systems, plus the ability to read or reverse‑engineer detailed control schematics when documentation is missing.
Ability to Develop Standards & Processes: You need the capability to create and maintain internal guidelines, specifications, maintenance programs, testing protocols, and documentation related to machine safeguarding and functional safety.
Strong Collaboration Across Global Teams: You must work effectively with remote, cross‑disciplinary teams and the Global Manufacturing Engineering group to ensure consistent application of machine‑safety standards worldwide.
Incident Investigation & Problem‑Solving Skills: You need the ability to lead or support root‑cause analyses for machine‑safety incidents and drive corrective and preventive actions across multiple sites.
Training & Communication Capability: You must be able to train employees, communicate new requirements, and translate complex safety concepts into clear guidance for diverse audiences.
Project Leadership & Vendor Management: You need the ability to act as SME on capital projects, manage external consultants, support remediation work, and ensure all safety solutions meet Cummins and industry standards.
Education, Licenses, Certifications:
