Sr. Engineer

This includes everything from infrastructure engineering and performance optimisation to database lifecycle management, storage architecture, integration patterns, monitoring, automation, and governance. You'll help shape the standards and capabilities that enable data to flow securely, efficiently, and intelligently across the enterprise.

Responsibilities:
Work closely with application teams and architects to design, implement and support database solutions that provide insights to make better decisions.
Design, administer, and support cloud database platforms across development, test, and production environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability.
Design, implement, and maintain database infrastructure, including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, backup/restore strategies, disaster recovery, and security hardening.
Perform advanced performance tuning and optimisation of Azure cloud databases.
Design, Implement and manage database HA/DR solutions, ensuring resilient and fault-tolerant architectures.
Collaborate with application teams to design efficient database schemas, data models, and integration patterns that support scalable and resilient systems.
Provision cloud infrastructure databases using IaC tools (Terraform, ARM templates)
Automate operational tasks using scripting, PowerShell, Python, etc. to improve consistency, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Support and execute database migrations to cloud platforms, including assessment, planning, data movement, cutover, and validation.
Enforce security via Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), Database Vault, and Key Vault.
Manage and optimise cloud database resources, including sizing, scaling, performance configuration, cost awareness, backup/restore policies, and security controls for Azure/AWS database deployments.
Implement cloud-based high availability and disaster recovery architectures, such as zone redundant deployments, geo replication, and automated failover strategies.
Automate routine DBA tasks to improve consistency, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Monitor database health and capacity using enterprise monitoring tools, proactively identify and resolve issues related to performance, storage, availability, and security.
Ensure compliance with data governance, auditing, encryption, and security standards; participate in vulnerability remediation and risk mitigation.
Participate in on-call rotation and provide support for complex database incidents, root cause analysis, and long-term remediation.
Contribute to the development of DBA standards, best practices, documentation, and operational runbooks.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
10+ years of hands-on experience as an SQL Server, PostgreSQL or MySQL supporting mission-critical, high availability environments.
Strong expertise with cloud databases, including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, backup/restore, performance tuning, indexing strategies, query optimisation, and security hardening.
5+ years of experience with cloud database administration and management.
3+ years of experience with Python, scripting, SQL, TSQL, and automation tools.
2+ years' experience with IaC tools for cloud database infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years' experience with CI/CD automation for database code deployments using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps.
2+ years' experience with enterprise monitoring tools.
Airline Industry Experience.
Skills, Licenses, and Certifications:
Expertise with the Azure Technology stack for data management, data ingestion, capture, processing, curation and creating consumption layers.
Expertise in providing practical direction within the Azure Native cloud services.
Azure Certifications (preferred).
A combination of Development and Administration experience in several of the following tools/platforms: Scripting: Python, Bash, SQL, PLSQL.
Data Platforms: SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Redis Cache, MongoDB, Cosmos DB.
Language:
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels within the organisation.
Physical ability necessary to safely and successfully perform the essential functions of the position, with or without any legally required reasonable accommodations that do not pose an undue hardship.
