Position Overview
The Geologist/Mining Engineer is responsible for developing long term reserves of quality stone, sand and gravel throughout Central and Southern Utah. The position is responsible for supporting all aggregate plant operations within Central and Southern Utah by clearly defining strategies to improve Life of Mining (LOM) and extend quarry reserves. Ideally this position will be based in St. George, Utah. However, it could be based at any of our operations in Central & Southern Utah (this would require additional travel).
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Strategic Land Acquisitions
Identify, secure, and develop high quality aggregate reserves for our hot mix asphalt, ready mix concrete, and construction operations.
Build effective working relationships with State and Federal agencies, local geologists, mining engineers and non-competitive mining companies to secure ownership of or rights to high quality aggregates.
Assist with technical evaluations and assessments including, but not limited to, geologic modeling, drilling and exploration, reserves assessment, and mine planning.
Liaise and negotiate on mineral-related matters with State and Federal agencies, academic institutions, the industry, and represent the company on committees, boards, industry bodies, and other relevant organizations as required.
Mine Plan Management
Will work closely with production managers to develop and maintain short, intermediate, and long-term LOM plans to achieve maximum value through the optimum utilization of all resources and reserves.
Work with General Managers, Plant Managers and quarry personnel to develop key performance indicators as it relates to optimizing quarry reserves, minimizing waste streams and lowering mining costs.
Maintain 3D Geologic Models of quarries utilizing Carlson software.
Coordinate periodic reviews of LOM plan to include block models, schedules and annual volumes by bench, site limitations and conditions, operational effectiveness, resource and reserve quality, and other relevant factors.
Generate necessary plans and technical illustrations to effectively communicate LOM and stripping plans, remediation efforts, and schedules for implementation in accordance with company standards.
Develop 5-year block model maps with appropriate volumes by bench with accurate maps and technical illustrations as needed to facilitate land related issues, including agreements, zoning, and permitting.
Conduct regular geotechnical surveys to identify, mitigate and resolve hazards.
Develop a strategic plan to move current aggregate resources into aggregate reserves as per SEC requirements.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Geology or Mine Engineering
5+ years of experience as a Geologist or Mine Engineer at an active mine site or developing quality aggregate reserves.
Working knowledge in assessing LOM resource and reserves, pit designs, development of 5-year block models for quarry mining to include effective water drainage control and overburden removal.
Knowledge of industrial geology as related to the construction industry.
Surveying knowledge and/or experience with GPS station gear.
Ability to think strategically and collaborate.
Work Requirements
Travel approximately 25% with brief periods to 50%
Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
