Database Administrator

Position Summary
The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the operational support, maintenance, security, performance, and availability of enterprise database platforms. This role works closely with application development teams to implement database changes, manage access, optimize performance, and ensure platform stability across production and non-production environments.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Change Implementation
Execute database changes on behalf of application teams including:
DDL (CREATE, ALTER, DROP objects)
DCL (GRANT, REVOKE, Role Management)
Schema changes and object migrations
Index creation and modification
Data model implementation
Review and validate database change requests for adherence to standards and best practices.
Coordinate and execute database releases through established change management processes.
Support application deployments requiring database modifications.
Performance Management & Tuning
Monitor database performance and proactively identify bottlenecks.
Analyze and tune SQL queries, stored procedures, indexes, and data access patterns.
Perform capacity planning and resource optimization.
Diagnose and resolve CPU, memory, locking, blocking, I/O, and concurrency issues.
Recommend architectural improvements to improve scalability and performance.
Conduct workload analysis and performance trend reporting.
Observability & Monitoring
Maintain database monitoring and alerting platforms.
Develop dashboards, metrics, and health indicators for database environments.
Investigate alerts and perform root cause analysis.
Define and track performance, availability, and operational KPIs.
Improve observability through instrumentation, automation, and operational runbooks.
Availability, Stability & Reliability
Maintain high availability and disaster recovery configurations.
Execute backup, recovery, and restore procedures.
Participate in incident response activities and production support rotations.
Conduct post-incident reviews and implement preventive measures.
Ensure database platforms meet defined availability and recovery objectives.
Security & Access Management
Provision and manage database access in accordance with least privilege principles.
Implement and maintain database roles, permissions, and security controls.
Support audit, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
Review privileged access and assist with periodic access certifications.
Partner with security teams to address vulnerabilities and remediation activities.
Database Maintenance
Perform routine database maintenance activities including:
Statistics updates
Reorganizations and rebuilds
Index maintenance
Data archival and purging
Space management
Patch management and upgrades
Maintain database housekeeping jobs and automation processes.
Monitor database growth and manage storage utilization.
Automation & Engineering
Develop and maintain automation for recurring DBA tasks.
Create scripts and tooling to improve operational efficiency.
Contribute to Infrastructure-as-Code and database deployment automation initiatives.
Standardize operational procedures and reduce manual effort through automation.
Application Team Support
Serve as a trusted advisor to application development teams on database design and usage.
Assist developers in troubleshooting application-related database issues.
Review database models and provide recommendations for performance, scalability, and maintainability.
Support testing and validation of database changes across environments.
Documentation & Governance
Create and maintain operational runbooks, standards, and technical documentation.
Ensure compliance with enterprise database standards and architectural guidelines.
Document production issues, lessons learned, and operational procedures.
Participate in technical reviews and architecture discussions.

Preferred Experience
5+ years of enterprise database administration experience.
Experience supporting mission-critical production systems.
Experience implementing DDL, DCL, and database deployments in regulated environments.
Experience with high availability, disaster recovery, and performance engineering.
Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis capabilities.
