About the Role 💼
We are seeking a high-caliber Senior Tax Operations Manager – California Taxes Specialist based in Colombia to serve as the technical and managerial backbone of our U.S. tax operations. In this role, you will lead a team of tax preparers, manage seasonal and year-round workflows, and perform high-level technical reviews for a diverse portfolio of business and individual clients.
The ideal candidate brings extensive, direct experience reviewing U.S. tax returns, deep expertise in California State Tax Law, and expert proficiency in Lacerte.
Key Responsibilities 🚀
📊 Technical Return Review: Perform final quality control and technical review on complex individual (1040) and business returns (1120S, 1120, 1065) along with their California state equivalents.
🌴 California Tax Leadership: Apply deep, current knowledge of California state tax nuances, CA-specific forms, credits, adjustments, and federal conformity/non-conformity issues.
👥 Team & Staff Management: Hire, onboard, train, delegate, and provide continuous performance feedback to a team of tax preparers.
⚙️ Workflow & Capacity Planning: Manage multi-preparer task assignments, deadlines, and project status across tax season (Jan–Apr) and extension peaks (Sept–Oct) using practice management tools.
🖥️ Software Diagnostics: Utilize Lacerte at a review level to diagnose errors, resolve diagnostics, and ensure error-free submissions.
🗣️ Client & Escalation Management: Translate complex tax matters into clear, plain language for clients and serve as the primary escalation point for complex issues.
Required Qualifications 📌
📍 Location: Must be residing and legally authorized to work remotely from Colombia.
☀️ California State Tax Expertise (CRITICAL): Proven hands-on experience with California state tax law, including CA schedules, state adjustments, and state conformity rules.
🗣️ Language Proficiency: C1 Advanced or C2 Fluent English (written and spoken). Must be able to communicate effectively with U.S. executives, staff, and clients.
📜 Technical Tax Review: Extensive years of direct experience preparing and reviewing complex 1040, 1120, 1120S, and 1065 returns.
💻 Software Mastery:
Lacerte Tax Software: Expert / Review-level proficiency (diagnostics, overrides, final sign-offs).
QuickBooks Accounting Software: Advanced review-level experience.
Practice management tools (e.g., Canopy) and advanced MS Excel.
🎯 People Leadership: Demonstrated track record of managing, training, and building workflows for tax preparers.
