About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Northeast Infrastructure, LLC is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the evaluation and design of electrical distribution systems for hospital and healthcare facilities. The position will focus on performing detailed electrical system studies for existing and proposed low- and medium-voltage distribution systems, with an emphasis on system safety, reliability, code compliance, and continuity of operations within active healthcare environments.
The Electrical Engineer will develop and maintain electrical power system models using SKM Power*Tools or similar power system analysis software and perform short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc-flash, and related engineering studies. The engineer will work closely with project engineers, designers, field personnel, and facility staff to obtain and verify existing electrical distribution system information and develop accurate models representative of actual field conditions.
Primary responsibilities include:
Develop and maintain low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution system models using SKM Power*Tools.
Perform short-circuit analyses to calculate available fault current and verify equipment interrupting and withstand ratings.
Perform protective device coordination studies, including development and evaluation of time-current coordination curves for circuit breakers, fuses, relays, and other protective devices.
Perform arc-flash hazard analyses in accordance with applicable requirements, including IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E.
Develop recommended protective-device settings to improve selective coordination while maintaining appropriate equipment and conductor protection.
Evaluate electrical equipment for adequate AIC/SCCR, bus withstand, and protective-device ratings based on calculated available fault current.
Review and model utility services, generators, transformers, switchgear, switchboards, ATSs, panelboards, motor control centers, motors, feeders, and other electrical distribution equipment.
Evaluate normal and emergency/essential electrical systems serving healthcare facilities, including generator and automatic transfer switch configurations.
Perform load-flow, voltage-drop, motor-starting, and other electrical system analyses as required by individual projects.
Review existing one-line diagrams, electrical drawings, equipment data, previous studies, and field investigation information for incorporation into system models.
Participate in field investigations to document electrical equipment nameplate information, protective-device types and settings, conductor sizes/lengths, transformer data, and other information required to develop accurate power system models.
Identify missing or conflicting field information and coordinate additional investigation as necessary to complete the study.
Evaluate study results and identify deficiencies, including overdutied equipment, inadequate interrupting ratings, coordination issues, excessive incident energy, and other system concerns.
Develop practical recommendations for correcting identified deficiencies while considering the operational requirements of active hospital facilities.
Prepare engineering reports, one-line diagrams, coordination curves, equipment evaluation reports, arc-flash labels, and supporting calculations.
Coordinate study findings with electrical design documents and incorporate required equipment ratings and protective-device settings into construction documents.
Perform QA/QC reviews of electrical studies and verify that models and reports accurately reflect the applicable design and field conditions.
Coordinate with facility personnel regarding electrical outages, system operating configurations, generator operation, ATS configurations, and other conditions affecting study results.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline is preferred, along with experience performing electrical power system studies for commercial, institutional, healthcare, or similar facilities. Experience with SKM Power*Tools is strongly preferred. Familiarity with NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, NFPA 99, IEEE 1584, and applicable healthcare electrical requirements is desirable.
Experience evaluating existing electrical distribution systems is particularly valuable, including the ability to interpret existing one-lines, identify incomplete or inconsistent field information, and develop technically defensible assumptions where existing documentation is limited.
The ideal candidate will have experience with 480/277 V and 208/120 V low-voltage systems as well as medium-voltage distribution systems, emergency generators, ATSs, healthcare essential electrical systems, switchgear, protective relaying, and selective coordination.
