Role Description The Language Contributor Africa role is a remote volunteer position focused on supporting AI systems with high-quality linguistic and cultural insights from African languages and communities. In this role, contributors may perform tasks such as data collection, text and audio transcription, translation, annotation, and validation to ensure accurate and contextually appropriate language data. Day-to-day activities can also include evaluating AI outputs, providing human preference judgments, identifying errors or biases, and contributing to safety testing and quality assurance processes. Contributors collaborate through Leangoogs AI’s technology platform and structured workflows, following clear guidelines while bringing local knowledge and cultural nuance to improve AI performance. This role is well-suited for individuals passionate about languages, AI, and the representation of African voices in emerging technologies.
Qualifications
Strong proficiency in at least one African language and good command of English, with the ability to read, write, and understand nuanced meanings and cultural context.
Experience or interest in linguistic tasks such as translation, transcription, annotation, or text review, with careful attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to evaluate and critique written or spoken content, identify errors or inconsistencies, and provide clear, constructive feedback.
Comfort using online tools and platforms for remote collaboration, including basic digital literacy and reliable internet access.
Demonstrated reliability, time management, and the ability to follow task guidelines and ethical standards for data handling and confidentiality.
Background in linguistics, African studies, communication, or related fields is beneficial but not required.
Interest in artificial intelligence, language technology, and improving representation of African communities in global AI systems.
