Head of QA & Automation

We looking for a Head of Quality Engineering to lead our quality function and improve how we test, release, and maintain software.
This is a hands-on leadership role. We need someone who can lead a QA team, shape the testing strategy, and still work closely with automation code, frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and developers.
A key focus of the role will be strengthening regression coverage, reducing reliance on manual testing, and making automated testing part of the release process.
You will report directly to the CTO and work closely with engineering, product, and other stakeholders.
What You’ll Do
Lead and develop the QA and automation team
Own the QA strategy, roadmap, and quality priorities
Build and improve test automation frameworks
Create automated coverage across API, integration, contract, UI, and end-to-end testing
Strengthen regression testing and reduce manual checking
Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines
Help establish merge and release gates
Test applications and services in containerised environments
Improve defect triage, root-cause analysis, and quality reporting
Join design and code reviews to improve testability early
Explore practical uses of AI-assisted and agentic testing
Communicate quality risks and release readiness clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
What We’re Looking For
Strong experience in software testing, QA automation, or quality engineering
Hands-on experience building or significantly improving automation frameworks
Experience leading QA engineers, SDETs, or automation teams
Strong working knowledge of TypeScript or JavaScript
Experience testing Node.js services and React applications
Good understanding of API, integration, contract, UI, and end-to-end testing
Experience working with CI/CD pipelines
Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or containerised environments
Strong understanding of regression strategy and risk-based testing
Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder-management skills
Exposure to AI-assisted testing, or the ability to learn it quickly
Technical Experience That Would Be Helpful
TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, and React
Playwright or Cypress
Jest, Vitest, Supertest, or Pact
GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, or similar tools
Docker and Kubernetes
AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
Jira and quality-reporting tools
Browser agents or LLM-assisted testing
Appium or mobile automation
You do not need experience with every tool listed. We are more interested in strong automation fundamentals, sound technical judgement, and the ability to lead a modern quality engineering function.
This is not a purely manual QA management role. The successful candidate should be comfortable leading people while remaining technically involved.
